The Tithe Applotments (1826) don't show any Elliotts in a Sheetrim townland (there are 3 in Monaghan), but the Griffith's index (1858-60) shows James Elliott in Sheetrim, Tedavnet parish, suggesting he was related to your John Elliott. You might search church records from that period.
