    1. Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] Birth certificates and civil records
    2. Sally
    3. Greetings! It is important when seeking Irish civil records, i.e. birth, marriage and death, to keep in mind these dates: Only Protestant marriages were recorded from 1845; the rest of the civil records applied to all from 1864. HOWEVER, and this is a big problem, not everyone complied with civil registration, even into the early 20th century. In my Catholic family, neither the marriage of a couple in the 1890s, nor the births of their five children (specifically one born in 1903) were recorded civilly. The information was only to be found in church records. It may have had to do with distrust of the registrars (i.e. they were English or were English supporters in most cases), or it was inconvenient to go to the market town on market day (when the traveling registrar showed up only every week or two, in my case on a Thursday, still market day -- no office or such then), or the weather was bad, or registration of the event in church records was deemed sufficient, or they were too far from the market town to walk and had no transport, or it was planting time and they were busy, or any other reason you can think of. Monaghan was a very rural county in the past, and to some extent still is in this time of autos and bus routes which only serve the main roads connecting some of the larger towns (I've ridden them and taken taxis out to cousins' rural farm homes from town). Hope this is helpful. Sally --- [email protected] wrote: > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Immigrants that died on ships.. > ([email protected]) > 2.
