    1. Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] [IRL-CAVAN] Properties in Cavan from early 1600s - looking for JACKSONs

    3. I have updated the page with the renaming of one of the columns and the addition of the bits around "Keneth": SEE: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/TABLES/1600-CAVAN-Property.html I have an image of a useful map - but I got it from a source that I now can't trace (because of my sometimes inconsistent record-keeping). It was called "Fig 4 - Ulster plantation allocation of lands in Cavan 1610-20" and the only hint at the title that I have is "Cavan Essays Book" - which sounds more like a description of the book rather than a title. I would suspect that it is covered by copyright, hence I would not be able to share it. One of them is Keneth. There are others. We find, however, that this patent was in fact originally given to Esme Stuart, Lord Aubigny. Looking for those records may be of great help. Oft times the best way to crack townland names is to find all of the various spellings, correlate them and map it into the modern name... > > When we cross reference to George Hill's excellent work " An historical account of the plantation in Ulster" here: http://books.google.com/books?id=801i1MUvSG8C&pg=PA308&lpg=PA308&dq=castle+Aubigny+cavan&source=bl&ots=e3AmmesIvv&sig=_NwHwN6v_7j9MR7zTIKD4WY95EM&hl=en&ei=hI_2S62OI4K78gbZ8LXhCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CB4Q6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=castle%20Aubigny%20cavan&f=false > > ... we find that Stuart was given "The great proportion of Kinneigh" containing the lands of Corveagh, one poll... etc." > > Having gotten this far, I would then search across townlands in Clankee, (see: http://www.seanruad.com/cgi-bin/iresrch) After doing so, I would posit the notion that your Keneth is in fact Kinneigh, which will easily lend itself to the modern name of the townland of Kinnea, Barony of Clankee, Civil Parish of Knockbride, PLU Bailieborough. I do think that once can see clearly how Keneth might be derived from from Cionn Ech ... We'd need a good townland map to see. From what I can see they are relatively close together, but I think Kinnea is probably pretty close to the truth here. > > I'll do some more on these as I can. > > I hope this will help. > > Shane > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Sharon Oddie Brown > Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2010 5:47 PM > To: Cavan; MONAGHAN LISTSERVE; LOUTH; [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: [IRL-CAVAN] Properties in Cavan from early 1600s - looking for JACKSONs > > I have just completed and posted a number of interrelated pages > concerning early property holdings in Co.
