I am trying for find out about my Grandfather. He lived at Tullyharnett, Castleblayney. In the "Monaghan Story" his brother (Robert) is mentioned about Home Rule. Have found out about his brothers and sister but not William in the Church Records of Church of Ireland Muckno in Castleblayney. William Hamilton Armstrong was born about 1860; Died in Belfast 22 Apr 1931. Have tried all the usual places but can't find his date of birth as it did not have to be registered. I do have my grandmother's dates. Annie Malone, she was born in Killanny and died in Belfast. I have is father and mother's marriage which was - 15 Dec 1847. Robert Armstrong married Eliza Hamilton Parish Church of Donaghmoyne. He was a bachelor and engineer and she was a spinster. He lived in Broomfield and she lived in Lisquill, parish of Donaghmoyne. His father was Robert Armstrong, (from Broomfield) and her father was James Hamilton. Is there anyway I can find out anymore about the Armstrong's. Perhaps someone will put me in the right direction. Thanks all. Cathleen
Hi Cathleen, send your message to the Fermanagh message board. Lots of Armstrong researchers on there and lots of our ancestors crossed the borders to and from Fermanagh and Monaghan. My great-great grandfather was William Armstrong born around 1780 in Northern Ireland. His death registration says that his father was "the late James Armstrong of Co. Monaghan". William & his wife Jane emigrated to Canada East around 1818. Their daughter Margaret was born in Ireland (1817) & they had 6 other children born in Southwest River, Canada East (Quebec province) -James Christopher (1819), William John (1822, Robert (1824), Wilson Joseph (1827), Thomas Sloan (1829), Ann Jane (1832). William died 18 May 1867 & is buried in St. James Anglican Church cemetery, Farnham, Quebec. Information concerning the birth registrations of his children in Canada East are in the records of St. Stephens Anglican Church in Chambly, Quebec. This is very likely because of an itinerant minister visiting Southwest River to perform official duties. Also in these records is William's marriage to a 2nd wife in 1836. I have not been able to find a death registration for his first wife, Jane (must be between 1832 & 1836). I have not been able to find any further information concerning the exact location where William & Jane lived while still in Ireland. A Breakey family lived in the settlement of Southwest River when the Armstrongs lived there. In fact one of William & Jane's sons, Wilson Joseph, married a Letitia Breakey who was probably a neighbour. As you probably know, the Breakey family name is well known in the Castleblayney area re the linen industry. It is a possibility they came from the same place. Any info I can find about my ancestor Armstrongs would be most welcome.
