    3. I'm glad I could help some people out there. You may thank Dr. Patrick J. Duffy for his outstanding research on these volumes of records. The italicized passages are from his essay reprinted in the Clogher Record called "Assisted Emigration from the Shirley Estate 1843-1854". Even if your family lived on the Shirley Estate you may not be listed in these papers because your family may not have received assistance from the landlord to obtain passage to emigrate. The original documents reside at PRONI. The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland. There were at least 1300 people involved with the Shirley estate program. There were other estates in Monaghan County. Names I missed on the first list: Kinneghan, Shafferty Mulholland: Emigrants 1844 to America- Mullholland Patk 27/Cath 20/of Listillister/granted 4lb10s Lynch: Emigrants 1844 to America Lynch James 18/no address/ granted 1lb5s Petitions of 1849- Lynch, Owen. Thomas Elliott: William George Smith was a brother-in-law to Thomas Elliott, the Liverpool agent, who looked after the emigrants' welfare. He died in 1851 aged 48. See Shirley, History of the County of Monaghan, p. 368 (Interestingly also, Trench's successor to the agency , George Morant was related to Shirley) (Krisha's note: This is unclear to me, whether Smith or Elliott died in 51. This is a footnote at the bottom of the page) "...Block bookings were made through the Liverpool agent (Elliott, a brother-in-law of WG Smith in the Carrick Estate Office) and passages generally paid to Liverpool."
