About my greatgreat grandfather a family bible says - "George Hyland born Ireland County Monahan in the year of our Lord 1799 August the 21st" George was a stone mason, and was in Canada by 15 September 1828 when he married Mary Ann Wilson at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Kingston, Ontario. At that time he lived in Pittsburgh Township, Frontenac County, Ontario. It is assumed that George came to work at his trade on the building of the Rideau Canal, or on Fort Henry at Kingston. He built a stone cottage in Pittsburgh, but by the 1840's he was farming in Camden East Township, Lennox and Addington. He died there 13 July 1870 and is buried in the cemetery less than a mile from his farm. There is no indication of parents' or siblings names, and although there were some other people with this surname in the area of Kingston, and in Lennox and Addington County, we have been unable to establish any relationship with them. The names of George and Mary Ann's children were Ann Jane, George, Mary, Wilson. Ann Jane married a man named William Hyland (whose family came to Canada in the early 1830's) but descendants maintain that they were not related. The IGI shows a George Hyland baptized 16 March 1800, son of William Hyland and Susanna Halliday, but in Kilcoo, County Down. The other ten children of this couple, whose baptisms also appear in the IGI, do not appear to match with any other known Hyland in the area at the time. Any help would be much appreciated.
