    1. [MONAGHAN] Martin Family
    2. Hello to All, I am looking for any information regarding my gggrandfather, James Martin, born in Monaghan c. 1800. He married Katherine Trainor and had at least one child, Patrick H. Martin, born in 1822. Patrick became an established shoemaker in Chicago. James married Mary ? and fathered Thomas (1840), Mary Elizabeth (1844) and Catherine (1848). All immigrated to Chicago in the 1850's. I am trying to verify this information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kathleen

    3. Kathleen, I think you might find your James Martin on the "Tithe Applotment Lists" c. late 1820's or early 1830's, under the name of his townland. I would have suggested you check the "Griffith's Valuation" CDROM, but for Co. Monaghan, that list was made from 1858/60 and your family had probably left Ireland already. Do you have any clue as to either the name of the Parish or the townland? You won't find your family in Civil Records, but you might be able to find them in Church records. Do you know their religion when they lived in Co. Monaghan?
