Hello all, I've researched my family back to the 1860's in Counties Northumberland and Durham in England. The oldest document I have is an 1861 census record of my ggggrandparents in Heworth parish (near Gateshead), County Durham. My ggggrandfather, Michael STREENAN, lists his birthplace as Ireland (no county or parish named), approx. birthdate 1830. Upon close inspection of the 1861 census record the surname might have been spelled SREENAN. Don't know if that was the census taker's interpretation or the way it really was spelled. When I searched the name SREENAN at the LDS website there were a lot of hits listing County Monaghan as the birthplace. I've had little luck searching for the STREENAN surname in the Irish surname lists and am wondering if the name used to be SREENAN and then changed to STREENAN, just as the STREENAN name was changed to STRENNEN when they immigrated to the US. Currently, I'm waiting for the 7 microfilms that contain the Householder's Index (for all the counties of Ireland) to arrive at my local FHC and maybe I'll find something in there. This surname is fairly rare, so I thought perhaps someone may have come across it in their County Monaghan research or possibly their are some descendants that still live in the area. As always, any information or help is greatly appreciated. Regards, Eric Strennen Researching families: STRENNEN, STREENAN, possibly SREENAN
