Sue Marcus has been posting information about Wallace baptisms in Monaghan in the first decades of the 19th century. I am very grateful for the information and for the film reference, because I am researching Monaghan Wallaces in that period. However, I wonder if anyone knows how long after birth a baptism could occur? Sue's list shows a Margaret Wallace baptized in 1821 to Thomas Wallace and Jane Elliott. From middle names of her children, I have had reason to suspect my Margaret Wallace's mother was an Elliott. However, the documentation I have on her suggests that she was born 1816 or 1817. Is there any possibility she could be the Margaret Wallace on Sue's list? Richard Smyth smyth@nc.rr.com or smyth@email.unc.edu
Yes, my own children In Oz were baptised at 4 and 2 years ( double ceremony). Our local minister was not impressed with my irregular attendance at church and refused to baptised my first born at the usual 6 -12 weeks. It was not till a family connection put me in touch with a Minister working in another parish who beleived all children have their own lives to live and welcomed any new 'Christians to the fold'. I also know that when I was 'Confirmed' at 14yrs there were several of our group attending the 'lessons prior to Confirmation' that had to be 'Baptised/ Christened' to meet the obligations of the Rites of Confirmation. Baptism is a church commitment not a legal obligation. ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Smyth <smyth@nc.rr.com> To: <IRL-MONAGHAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 01, 2000 8:52 AM Subject: [MONAGHAN~] Age of Baptism in Monaghan circa 1820? > Sue Marcus has been posting information about Wallace baptisms in Monaghan > in the first decades of the 19th century.
