Hello, RE: Rollcall I am searching for any information on the ancestors of my gg grandparents, Mary McMahon (b.1838 County Monaghan) & Thomas Smith (b.1824 County Monaghan). Thomas emigrated to the U.S. sometime between 1849-1851 and entered by way of New York and then came across the country with General Fremont and settled in Chinese Camp (gold mining camp) in California. At the age of 13 (1851) Mary came by freighter around Cape Horn to San Francisco. She was sponsored by a family by the name of Riordan and lived with them a year or so and then made her way to Chinese Camp where she met Thomas. They married and settled in Stanislaus County and had 10 children. Thomas was a sheep and cattle rancher so I am woundering if that was his occupation in County Monaghan Ireland? The parents name listed on Mary's death certificate are Michael McMahon and Judith Griffin McMahon. I know she had at least 1 brother named James McMahon and that he also emigrated to the U.S. and joined his sister. I also know that The McMahon family was Roman Catholic. I know nothing of the Smith family but would very much like to know more. Any information would be very much appreciated! Best Regards, Elizabeth Pleasanton, California E-Mail: Lizxyz@aol.com
