Dick, The townland databases you find on the net are based on the Townland index which was created after the 1851 census. There is also another one based on the 1841 census but I don't know if anyone has used that in any of those I've seen. Now - there is no Swanville in the www.seanruad.com townland database and I think that is the same one as used in the PRONI site. Seán used the 1851 Townland Index. Place names changed from census to census - in various books, wills and things you see reference to somewhere alias/also known as/orse some other name - meaning that it used to be called the other and is now called this. Confusing - but some day someone might just work it all out and list all those other names for every townland in Ireland. I've checked my Townland Index book for anything which may be similar to Swanville in Monaghan and come up with nothing - I'd guess that it was the name of a house - the Swan coming from Swanzy. Ballagh is listed as being in the parish of Drumsnat on the townland index. That's the only Ballagh for county Monaghan.
