    1. 1796 MARTIN flax growers Co. Monaghan
    2. I pray this formatting works so you can see the 1796 geographic spread of MARTIN surname "flax growers" in county Monaghan. My Irish MARTIN family all came & settled in Boston, MA ca 1825. Aside from the fact that I know little about each of the "Barony" ( including perhaps proper spelling) and I have no indication that any of the family were "flax growers" and what that might have to do with my approach to research, the 1796 list has interesting implications for me when I consider naming traditions in Irish families and the unequal geographic spread. The earliest known ancestor in my MARTIN family was Edward; son's named: Bryan, James, Patrick, Peter, Thomas. I see that nearly half of all MARTINs in Monaghan are from the southern Barony of Farney, and son Bryan's naturalization papers have him born 1799 in Carrickmacross (also in this Barony). I also note that the ONLY instances of the given names Edward, Bryan, Peter and Thomas are of this southern Barony. In the case of the given names James and Patrick, the majority are also in the south. Of special note, family info said that son James was born Killanny parish ca 1810. Conclusions: Given the likely birth year range of the sons of Edward (est 1785-1815), at least SOME of the below are likely uncles or close relatives; Edward of Donaghmoyne parish in 1796 could be the immigrant ancestor of 1824. Am I seeing too much here? Thanks for the patience and your thoughts. Regards, Al Rose
