    1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] McConnell and Gordon Families of Monaghan Parish
    2. Robert McConnell
    3. I have been looking throughout Ireland for closely related Gordon and McConnell families and have just found the only case to be on Aghintamy Townland, Monaghan Parish, County Monaghan. This 104 acre TLD is about 3 Km southeast of the town of Monaghan on the N2 to Dublin. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who has specific information about these particular families. John McConnell and James, Samuel, Andrew and William Gordon were all listed in the 1826 Tithe records for Aughentamy Townland, Monaghan Parish, County Monaghan which is right next to Aghintamy TLD. The Griffith's Evaluation census for Aghintamy TLD taken from 1846 - 1852 listed a James & William Gordon plus a Margaret and 3 William McConnells, one with a father named Hugh. A Jane McConnell was listed in Tirfinnog TLD about 1/2 mile away. There is a Hugh McConnell with a 78 year old Uncle William on Aghintamy TLD in the 1901 census but all the Gordons died or had left. Here in the U.S. my William McConnell appears to be close to the William and Jane Gordon family in Philadelphia c. 1847-1853. Their children were named Sarah, James, David, William, Margaret and Hugh. The first three were born in Ireland per the 1850 census. William Gordon married a Mary Harbison in 1853 but I found no divorce, death or new marriage record for his first wife Jane Gordon. Per the 1856 Dubuque Co. Iowa census, my William McConnell plus (wife?) Jane and a David Gordon all born in Ireland and of the correct age are living on a farm in Vernon Township. Jane was listed as William's wife on their land deeds and in the 1860 census but she died in 1864 without having any children by him. I am starting to think that maybe she was really his older sister Jane Gordon McConnell. He son David went back to Philadelphia prior to 1860, joined the Union Army with his brother James in 1862 and died in 1863 of Typhoid Fever which he contracted at the army's Falmouth Station winter camp. My William McConnell married my great grandmother Charlotte Bouche in 1864 and had their their first son baptized as John G. W. McConnell. It has been a twenty year search to find my great grandfather's roots in Ireland and I will be forever greatful to anyone on this list that can help me sort this out. Robert McConnell
