    3. Hello list, I am trying to trace the family of my paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Dodd b abt1890 in Northumberland England and died in the 1980s in Canada. She is said to have been 'Irish' and I am enjoying trying to find out how much of this myth was true. In fact, not she or her parents were born in Ireland, but her maternal grandparents, my great great grandparents. Now I'm trying to trace them back further. One day, I hope to visit the Irish National Library and consult the parish records for myself, but meantime i wonder whether anyone has come across the family, in their own lines or anywhere else :- Michael McNally various spellings, born around 1812 in Co Monaghan, parish unknown and wife Margaret Fitzpatrick also b around 1812 in Co Monaghan. Children registered with them in Hexham Northumberland are Mary 1839 Owen 1844 Michael 1850 Margaret 1855 Ann 1857 George 1859. Birth years approximate, Mary and Owen born Ireland, Michael jr born Scotland and the others including my great grandmother 'Margaret born Hexham. Firstborn children suggest an eaerlier generation with names Mary and Owen. Margaret 1812ish maiden name Fitzpatrick from son George's birth record. I'd be interested in any light you may be able to shed on this family or where I might find out more about them. Thank you Katie de Haan The Netherlands

    3. Hi Katie, You should visit the Monaghan Library website and look at their "Tracing Your Ancestors Guide" pdf file. http://www.monaghan.ie/contentv3/services/library/historygenealogy/ My family comes from Moneyvolan in Clontibret parish but many events took place in St Mary's RC Church in Muckno parish. Records start in the 1830s. They are available on microfilm through the LDS Family History Centers. I assume the LDS Mormons are in the Netherlands? Visit familysearch.org to look at their info. I was able to find a 1858 marriage for my family - both bride and groom from Clontibret. However, before the 1850s they are not in the best shape with many pages not readable. Keep in mind that first names are in Latin. Also visit the IGP: http://www.igp-web.com/ for info by county. The website is having issues this week but should be back up soon.
