    2. The National Archives have just posted the Tithe Applotments, which were done in the 1820s and 1830s--http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp A search for McNallys in Monaghan turns up 100, with 61 of them in Clontibret parish, including several Owens, and also many Fitzpatricks. Many parish records have been filmed by the LDS (check the catalog on familysearch.org). Unfortunately, Catholic Clontibret records don't begin until 1860, too late for you, but if your ancestors were Protestant, you might be in luck. She is said to have been 'Irish' and I am enjoying trying to find out how much of this myth was true. In fact, not she or her parents were born in Ireland, but her maternal grandparents, my great great grandparents. Now I'm trying to trace them back further. One day, I hope to visit the Irish National Library and consult the parish records for myself, but meantime i wonder whether anyone has come across the family, in their own lines or anywhere else :- Michael McNally various spellings, born around 1812 in Co Monaghan, parish unknown and wife Margaret Fitzpatrick also b around 1812 in Co Monaghan. Children registered with them in Hexham Northumberland are Mary 1839 Owen 1844 Michael 1850 Margaret 1855 Ann 1857 George 1859. Birth years approximate, Mary and Owen born Ireland, Michael jr born Scotland and the others including my great grandmother 'Margaret born Hexham. Firstborn children suggest an eaerlier generation with names Mary and Owen. Margaret 1812ish maiden name Fitzpatrick from son George's birth record. I'd be interested in any light you may be able to shed on this family or where I might find out more about them. 3. Diane, Thank you for this. I had looked at the Tithe Applotments, but wasn't yet sure what to make of them. Still unfamiliar to Ireland resources, I'd had no idea whether any of my lot would have appeared in them. Your way of searching enables me to focus a little better. Clontibret might indeed be a good place to start, although when I vary the spelling to McAnally, McEnally etc, other parishes are interesting too. At least Fitzpatrick spelling is more likely to stay the same. Trawling these pages will keep me busy for some time and it remains to be seen whether I'll make any real progress, but it's fascinating to see the distribution of names, sur and first. And tracing the lie of the parishes will help to give me more insight into this new-found area in my family lines. (This year, after 64 years of knowing little or nothing about who my father was, I finally managed to trace his family, and have met up with cousins, his sister and even some of my half-siblings half across the world. More of those still to be found, but meantime I've been tracing our Dad's roots back to England and now Ireland. That was something none of his family in Canada knew about, so it's lovely to be able to share this with them.) Yes, in these McNally/Fitzpatrick lines I am looking for RC records. You say Clontibret parish records start in 1860. Is there any likelihood of finding other sources? Somewhere I saw a disclaimer at the top of the available records pages saying "this exludes original records held locally." Might there be earlier parish records still in existence somewhere in Co Monaghan? And on one list of earlier Church of Ireland records, I saw plenty of names that were likely of Catholic origin, not just marriages between denominations. I know that in some areas and times in Scotland, non Church of Scotland events were recorded in their annals in various villages, for some attempt at 'completeness'. Did anything similar ever occur in Irish parishes, I wonder? Just thinking aloud, thank you, Katie de Haan 2012/11/21 <dlculhane@cs.com> > > > The National Archives have just posted the Tithe Applotments, which were > done in the 1820s and 1830s-- > http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp A > search for McNallys in Monaghan turns up 100, with 61 of them in Clontibret > parish, including several Owens, and also many Fitzpatricks. > > Many parish records have been filmed by the LDS (check the catalog on > familysearch.org). 1. Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] McNALLY and FITZPATRICK Co Monaghan early 1800s
    2. Katie, you could try e-mailing (sower@eircom.net) or writing (Parochial House, Clontibret, Co. Monaghan) St. Mary's in Clontibret and asking if they might have Michael and Margaret's marriage or any baptisms of their children in the late 1830s and 1840s (many children died in infancy in those years; there were likely children born between Mary, Owen, and Michael). You might try Church of Ireland records, too, though it's a long shot. Believe me, I understand your excitement. All my grandparents were born in Ireland and emigrated separately to Illinois in the 1890s, but I was able to trace all their families and visit their birthplaces. It's wonderful.
