Diane Yes, I have searched both. The figures for the birth dates come from the two census, but they are approximate because, just as with the US census information from those days, people simply didn't know when they were born. The Familysearch information is some of the least helpful I've found, especially for Ireland. Their records seem to be spotty, some registered others not, and often only the name and the year are available, but no way to certify who among the multiple possibilities is yours. Same thing for Ancestry.com records for Ireland. About the latter, though, I have a question. When one searches for marriage records, a name and approximate date are given but not the parents' names or the spouse's. Clicking on the link for names appearing on the same page is only helpful if you already know the spouse's name. I have a record for Patrick COYLE's marriage in the April - June quarter of 1951, registered in Castleblaney, and for Annie R McCAFFREY that same quarter of 1951 but with registration in Monaghan. I have a strong suspicion that these two are spouses. Here is my question: Are spouses registered in the district where they married or are they registered in the district where they reside? Is it possible that Patrick from Roo married Annie from, say, Monaghan town, and that each appears therefore on a separate page of the registry for that year? John Grimes
Normally a marriage was registered once, in the district where the marriage took place. As to the information on familysearch, that's the index information only. To get a photocopy of the original registration, with much more information, you have to write the GRO in Ireland or the LDS for those years they've filmed (births 1864-81, 1900-13, 1930-55; deaths and marriages 1864-70). And indeed, not everyone registered, especially in the early years.
