My gt gt grandfather Joseph Smyth joined the army, Royal Engineers,  in 1849 in Glasgow. He was a wheeler, born 1827 in Kilmore, Co.Monaghan. 3. Hi, Hugh When you hopefully receive some information that may help in your search, why don't you send me some of your Tree. I have been researching the McCann family over here in Canada. They were mostly born in County Armagh, and I believe they were some of the people sent or who left for County Mayo after the Battle of the Diamond. But, these McCanns settled in Ontario, Canada: Here's our short list: Arthur had sons Hugh, Miles, and Bernard. They immigrated around 1843 to Ontario. Hugh had sons John, Arthur, Patrick and Peter. Some remained in Ontario; some moved to the States. There is information on the McCanns & Hughes intermingling on Ancestry.com if you have access to it; you may find something there. 2. Johanna, you may already know this, but Griffith's shows a Peter Fagan in the town of Carrickmacross and also in town Revd. James Hughes, in other townlands another James Hughes and a Thomas Hughes. Peter probably a relation of your Thomas. Bad timing Christina! I've had 4 or 5 people contact me who are willing to just o into lots of graveyards and just blitz them taking photo after hoto BUT they would just be sending them as Pic_001 to Pic_045 etc from each raveyard. I would have put all these cemeteries on IGP but if you have o one to even just rename them to the surname on the g/stone there is not much oint in me sending them... PLUS... IF someone volunteered to just do 10 of them they don't need any fancy rogram!! I did Upper Clonaneese http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/tyrone/photos/tombstones/tyrone-upper-clonaneese-pres/index.html ll I had to do was pen them in Paint...use the cutting Tool and just cut/crop the gravestone part nd then hit Paste.... Even if one uses Windows Photo Gallery to view their photos there is 'Fix' on he Toolbar and they get the 'Crop' option there, so anyone could elp......so all they have to do is simple...open Pic_001 for example...then ix/Crop and save it as "smith" or whatever name is on the stone! Simple! his is actually quicker than using Paint.... A few volunteers could easily do 20 photos in a few minutes. I'm going to get quite a few g/yards from these people and they are willing to ake all the stones in each one but like you I wouldn't have time to do hem all myself so if you can't get a few people willing to volunteer to do a ew then neither am I....plus I still have 100's of photos for Monaghan hat are not on IGP for various cemeteries. You have your own research to do and so do I, these are going to take up too uch time for one or two people to do... I'm not going to be able to do much over next few weeks as I've a few people to ake around Monaghan and Cavan showing them their roots otherwise I'd ssist you. Plus I've to go to Donegal to look for some of mine I was going to o a few cemeteries there but if you are snowed under trying to do hese for everyone's benefit maybe I might be doing you a favour by not hotographing them. I don't mind volunteering to take pics but if no one is illing to volunteer to even just rename them then maybe I've taken enough ics... Hope you get a few volunteers as it's not Rocket Science! 3. Just looking at the recent survey for this g/yard, it shows the locations for 85 'known' graves and 87 name 'unknown'. Even with the 85 knowns....very few have g/stones. So it is pretty much a 50/50 thing, if your kin are there. I visited it last year. The church holds a baptismal register and a death register, both going back to the late 1800s. There is also a register of the Vestrymen from about that time. I'm not sure where the marriage register is. This work is probably because it is a major anniversary of the church. Local Presbyterian births and deaths are also recorded in the registers. 3. Nice one. Of course not all of us can afford LUXURY software.....hehehe. With IGP covering the whole country, 32 counties, so much work goes on behind the scenes to get them all named etc..a few helpers is what is needed. I only take 20 photos in a g/yard now because I've to take pics, name them, crop them etc, I was going to do Collooney in Sligo last Tuesday but only took 20 because of shortage of helpers, I could have taken 70 photos or so....then went to Medieval Cemetery near Boyle but didn't take pics as I wouldn't have time to name them etc. Am sure the next batch won't be long coming just to clear backlog!! Bad timing Christina! I've had 4 or 5 people contact me who are willing to just go into lots of graveyards and just blitz them taking photo after photo BUT they would just be sending them as Pic_001 to Pic_045 etc from each graveyard. I would have put all these cemeteries on IGP but if you have no one to even just rename them to the surname on the g/stone there is not much point in me sending them... PLUS... IF someone volunteered to just do 10 of them they don't need any fancy Program!! I did Upper Clonaneese http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/tyrone/photos/tombstones/tyrone-upper-clonaneese-pres/index.html All I had to do was open them in Paint...use the cutting Tool and just cut/crop the gravestone part and then hit Paste.... Even if one uses Windows Photo Gallery to view their photos there is 'Fix' on the Toolbar and they get the 'Crop' option there, so anyone could help......so all they have to do is simple...open Pic_001 for example...then Fix/Crop and save it as "smith" or whatever name is on the stone! Simple! This is actually quicker than using Paint.... A few volunteers could easily do 20 photos in a few minutes. I'm going to get quite a few g/yards from these people and they are willing to take all the stones in each one but like you I wouldn't have time to do them all myself so if you can't get a few people willing to volunteer to do a few then neither am I....plus I still have 100's of photos for Monaghan that are not on IGP for various cemeteries. You have your own research to do and so do I, these are going to take up too much time for one or two people to do... I'm not going to be able to do much over next few weeks as I've a few people to take around Monaghan and Cavan showing them their roots otherwise I'd assist you. Plus I've to go to Donegal to look for some of mine I was going to do a few cemeteries there but if you are snowed under trying to do these for everyone's benefit maybe I might be doing you a favour by not photographing them. I don't mind volunteering to take pics but if no one is willing to volunteer to even just rename them then maybe I've taken enough pics... Hope you get a few volunteers as it's not Rocket Science! DH [IRL-MONAGHAN] [Off Topic] need help with headstone photos /Date:/ Thu, 14 Jun 2012 08:42:19 -0400 I was asked recently, what kind of help we need to get headstones online etc. We have a good problem. So many headstone photos are coming in that the slowdown is naming the photos and cropping them down to show just the headstone. (Hint to photographers, get in pretty close to the headstone.) *If you would like to help, and you have a program like Picassa or Irfanviewer or something that will allow you to rename photos and crop them, then please email me off list. We are talking a lot of photos, so it will still take some time to do this and we want to keep our turnover to 2 or 3 days. So, be aware that this is not for the faint hearted.
