I have been interested in migration between Ulster and north east England for some time because that was the route some of my ancestors took. I did wonder whether anyone had undertaken a deeper study on the subject. I also wondered whether the link between the north east and Ulster went back before the steel and coal industries and that Ulstermen came across to take in the harvest (and as the museum at Stalling Busk shows to shear the sheep). My great grandfather Patrick Callan from Drumgoose in County Monaghan appears in Middlesbrough in 1870 when he marries. The census and certificates for him indicate he is a labourer in the steel works. However, my father understood that this job had been combined with the job of recruiting agent going into pubs, railway stations and other places Irish might congregate and persuading people not to go home after the harvest but to go into the steelworks. Whether this job was specific to him or whether in fact the steelworks paid a bounty for recruits I do not know. However it is possible that Ulstermen doing the recruiting might bring in more Ulstermen. My limited reading of the census for South Bank shows a number of Monaghan and Armagh men. Whilst Patrick Callan may have been coming to an area he knew - I understand that, at least immediately after the famine the family came to England to work - I have no suggestion that my Connelly ancestors from Tyrone ever did. Joseph Patrick Connelly reputedly ran away from Pomeroy on his way to school and turned up at his sister's in Newcastle. Looking at the facts his brother marries a County Tyrone girl in Leadgate in 1866. At least one sister arrives in Newcastle in 1866 or 7. By 1871 Joseph Patrick is in Gateshead, three of his sisters are in Newcastle and his brother is still in Leadgate. Again in looking through the records there are a lot of Tyrone names. Incidentally for anyone whose ancestors passed through the north east Brooms is not the only church recording place of origin on marriage entries. Stockton (which covers most of Teesside at that date) does so around 1850. It names the parents and if they are living says where. I think the entries are townlands rather than parishes but I have not checked this. Teresa
Many college and university libraries have a program called jstor.org that gives online access to journal articles including the Clogher Record. HiIn fact I have seen this article, and I have complete photocopies of the Brooms marriage registerrefered to - from 1842 to 1855, when a new format of register was introduced and references to the residence and former residences in Ireland ceased. Similarly I have the early baptism reg from Brooms. However the Brooms register records no marriages, English or Irish between 18 August 1842, and 3 Feb 1845. The first recorded Irish marriage at Brooms occurred in on 4thMay 1845, when Michael Kelly married Anne Quinn. There was a further such marriage the following month. The next Irish marriage took place in Feb 1846, with another later that month. There were no further marriages of Irish partners recorded until June of that year (1846) when there were three, two more followed in July and one in August 1846. It seems highly unlikely that there were no Irish marriages prior to May 1845 as on 30 Dec. 1844 Daniel O’Connell’s ‘Repeal Rent’ fund, received a donation of £1 6s and 0d from the Rev. H Newsham, of Brooms. While Daniel O’Connell was held in high regard by the Church in Ireland where he was seen as a bulwark against more radical and violent forms of dissent, such as Ribbonism, it seems highly unlikely that Henry Newsham, a Lancashire born English priest, would have been sending money to Ireland from his own pocket. It seems more likely that Fr Newsham was forwarding money collected from his parishioners; this suggests an Irish community was already established in the area. On 2 Sept 1845 £3 16s was sent to the Repeal fund by Mr. James Burke, from Crookhall, Shotley Bridge, on behalf of ”76 contributors who are struggling for existence in the land of the Saxons – doomed to earn their bread in the bowels of the earth*, where they seldom meet anything but insult from their taskmasters, and they hope the time is not far distant when they can return to their native land, under the protection of a domestic parliament”. (*coal or ironstone miners MB) [Freeman’s Journal, Dublin]. Clearly by the autumn of 1845, if not earlier, there was a viable Irish community in the area. In this light it's unfortunate that there seem to be gaps in both register. However the entries that are available give interesting detail. If anyone wants a look up in the registers email me. _____________ Michael Burns To listen to my songs and tunes, go to http://michaelburns1.com/ >________________________________ > From: "irl-monaghan-request@rootsweb.com" <irl-monaghan-request@rootsweb.com> >To: irl-monaghan@rootsweb.com >Sent: Sunday, 23 December 2012, 8:00 >Subject: IRL-MONAGHAN Digest, Vol 7, Issue 197 > > > >+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ >Put SURNAMES in CAPS > >Today's Topics: > > 1. Hello I don't have ancestors from Co Monaghan, but there was substantial immigration from the county to my home town of Consett. People from Armagh, Louth, Cavan, Tyrone and Monaghan came in the 1840’s, some before 1847 to work in the iron industry and some in the coal mines. If anyone is researching people with such connections feel free to contact me. I have a blog with information on my ancestors in North West Durham which contains a lot of back ground info on the Irish in the area in the 1800s it’s at hedgehog55.blogspot.com/ I also have a site with tunes and songs that I’ve written, it’s at http://michaelburns1.com/ Many of the songs and tunes are inspired by my Irish roots. Michael, I enjoyed reading your blog. http://hedgehog55.blogspot.ca/ I would never have guessed that there would be such a concentration of such Irish in that part of England. I guess it makes sense to look at where job opportunities were, and how they fit with the skills of family members.
