    3. Lots of county history. Maybe you can find one of your ancestors mentioned asbeing transported to Tasmania, hanged, or having done some good deeds. Here's how to read or copy; HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF MONAGHAN, by Denis Carolan Rushe, 1895. 210 pages. Go here and at the left of the page you have choices on how you want to save the book; Read online, PDF, Kindle, Full Text, etc. http://archive.org/details/historicalsketch00rushrich I tried PDF but it took over 2 minutes before it appeared. ( Using a 2.8MHZ puter with 2gb of memory). Fastest way is the FULL TEXT, then when it appears, click File in the menu bar and "Save As" .

    3. Birth certificiates will obviously give you place of birth and usually mothers maiden name if married, fathers name and occupation is normal as well. Death certificates as said before will give place of death and cause of death, if married, and name of informant. I found a death for Catherine Smyth in 1908 correct age, and all three entries in Monaghan, with the births at Tiernshinch. I do recall seeing that some on the Indices on the LDS are incomplete. I do know of two deaths one in 1901 and one in 1903 which are definitely NOT in the LDS listings. The chances are you will find what you are after, but if not don't assume it did not happen. If you can't find it on the LDS list you may have to get someone to check the Official Index at the local Registrars. Your major problem is the lack of detail on Irish death certificates. You may find several Joseph Smyths and unless you know which townland he died in you may not know which is yours. If you are VERY lucky one of his relatives may have been the informant and that will be recorded. If the informant was neighbour or doctor it will not have any useful genealogical data. The stated age on the certificate may be a guess and be well out. I have a death certificate where the neighbour was the informant, and the stated age was 66. When this gentleman was buried his age in the church records was 84. I did an LDS check for Joseph Smyth dying Monaghan 1871 - 1901 and came back with 1589 hits. 3. Bob I have found that some people are missing too. From things I have read, I think that sometimes people didn't want to be bothered with death registration. There was apparently a fee too, which some wanted to avoid. So, a certain percentage are missing because they wouldn't register the death. I don't think it is any lack in the indexes. 3. WOW! Thank you, Sean, for sharing this information with us all. I think it's spot on with being aligned with a listserve that helps us trace our Monaghan roots. I made my first ever trip to Monaghan last May and had pretty good success in finding my family's roots in Clontibret and Muckno parishes, but there is so much more that I missed. With the newfound resources of this listserve, along with what the County Monaghan Fund is offering, I might just have enough new leads to justify a return trip in 2013!
