Dear All I am looking for info on JOHN MARTIN and his parents, etc. John Martin was born in Derryrusk on 7 May 1880 and married Mary Jane Hawthorn(e) in January 1918 in Aughnamullen (various spellings). John's father was also a John born, I think, in 1845 in Co Monaghan, and who died in Derryroosk, (a spelling variation) on 21 Oct 1907. John's mother was Susan Johnston who was born, I think, in 1849 in Co Monaghan. MARY JANE HAWTHORNE'S was born in Tattybrack on 20 Nov 1897. Her parents were David John Hawthorne born 1861 in Tattybrack and Mary Jane King born on 27 May 1860 possibly in or near Castleblaney. David John Hawthorne's parents were John Hawthorn(e) born 13 June 1816 and died 14 June 1900 in Tattybrack, and Sarah (surname unknown) born 1823 (?), married in Cootehill before 1848, and died in Tattybrack 11 Mar 1910. I think John Hawthorne's father was a Thomas Hawthorne. MARY JANE KING'S parents were Thomas King and Eliza Anne Irwin. Thomas King was born in 1838(?) and died in Drumhillagh on 28 Oct 1871. Eliza Irwin was born in 1836 in Aughnamullen, married in Castleblaney in 1855 and died before 1871. I think that Thomas King's father was John King who died 4 Feb 1863 in Corbrack. I think that Eliza Irwin's father was a Samuel Irwin. The Martins were Church of Ireland. The Hawthornes and Kings were Presbyterian. Any additional info or corrections would be welcome. Good day to all, I'm looking for additional information and/or a family connection -- Hugh McConnell (a farmer) born circa 1780's and his wife Mary Johnston. Who are their children? There are a four Hugh's listed in the Tithe books, however, one that stands out, is 1832 for Lissnanour, Tehallan, Monaghan. Same year and location, a Robert Johnston is also listed, suggesting a family connection. To further substantiate residence, Hugh's grandson, Robert McConnell (born 1837) was residing in Lisnanore (as per his child's birth registration in 1867), and it is believed he is the same one listed on Griffith's Valuation (1864) at Lisnanore. John Garvin born circa 1800 was living on the Tyholland Glebe with his wife Ellen ? (confirmed by marriage records of his children). He was a "shoemaker". The family were members of the Parish of Tyholland, Church of Ireland. John Smith born circa 1780 married to ? Campbell. His occupation is listed as a "carpenter" as per his daughter Martha's death record. She is the wife of John McConnell, son of Hugh. Residence unknown. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you look for Owen Kelly on the Tithe Applotments on the National Archives site, you'll see where that name was most common around 1830, perhaps one the father of your Owen. The Famine almost certainly played a role in his emigrating, and it's unlikely your Owen was all alone. If his parents had died, he may have been with an aunt, uncle, or cousin. I am trying to find my Kelly ancestors who came from Monaghan.....Where I have no idea. My great grandfather Owen Kelly, born in 1842 and ten years later in 1852 to left Ireland to come to Boston. He arrived here in the Boston area in August of 1852. I have found a few Owen Kelly's on the ships lists and am not positive which one is him. I have never found any other Kelly's with him. I would think that if a 10 year old was to sail alone, he would have someone to keep an eye on him. I have his citizenship papers and it just says the he was born in Monaghan, Ireland. I lose him after he arrives and cannot find him so far living with anyone. About 1860-62 he signs up for the Civil War and enlists two or three times over the next few years. About 1866 he marries a Joanna Harrington and they move to Stoneham Ma where they lived and had three children. William, Mary and John Philip. John is my grandfather. His death certificate says that his father was also an Owen Kelly and that his wife was Mary. Great help right!! No one in our family knows much about the old Kelly family other than he may have had a sister Catherine who married a Michael Welch. I still haven't looked into their records and the only things I knew was that Catherine went to live with my grandfather after her husband Michael died. If I can locate their records it may tell me something...hopefully! I cannot recall my aunt Mary or my grandfather talking about the family in Ireland and I know my father didn't know much either. I do have a question for the group! Did young children leave Ireland alone and head to the US?? I am also wondering if his parents may have been affected by the famine if they died would there be any records in Ireland listing those that died? I know I am looking for a needle in a hay stack, but have learned that clue can come from the craziest places...and that is what I am hoping! I also realize that Kelly is a very common name and can be spelled Kelley. I have checked both spellings. In my own mind I wonder if Owen and Mary died during the famine and someone took pity on Owen Jr and put him on a boat to America! Makes sense to me. Hope someone on here will have additional places I can check to find out where Owen came from. Thanks a million.... I would be interested in knowing more about two of my ancestors who I believe might be from this area. Great grandfather, Micheal McCabe (Father=Francis), emigrated to NYC circa 1870. He married a Sarah Nixon (daughter of James Nixon and Jane Jones) not long after his arrival. Thinking it's possible that they could have known each other while living in Ireland. One Protestant, one Catholic. I don't know of any WRIGHT family connection. Found this online and not sure if it is a new site. For anyone interested. I do not follow much in Monaghan but I do know that Christina has worked hard on the IGP website and not sure if this one includes photos of each headstone. http://www.carrickmacrossworkhouse.com/ Also kudos to Dave Hall who has photographed many headstones in Monaghan Janet
Hello Sean. Now I'm grasping at straws - as you do after 25 years of searching. Have you come across the names of Donnelly, Hughes, McKevitt and Kelly. Also Coyne, Cusack, Hammill. These names were sponsors for the Fagan children and I found these in the parish records of St Cuthberts in North Shields where the family emigrated. I've tried to find a connection - maybe they were cousins. If these names are also in your family there maybe some hope. Your comments would be welcome. Cheers. Hello Sean. I am researching the Hanratty family, my g/grandmother being Alice Hanratty b c1841. Unfortunately don't have an area for her, however the information I do have is as follows. Alice Hanratty married Edward Fagan c1860 - cant find a marriage record They lived in Corcullioge in Co Monaghan in 1872 where a son Edward was born They lived in Hackballs Cross and Haggardstown in Co Louth where Thomas and Bridget were born. Another daughter Annie was born North Shields Northumberland 1866 died Barronstown County of Louth and Armagh. Alice and Edward had 10 children, Peter, Mary, Anne, Thomas, Bridget, Edward, Alice, Anne, John and Edward. These children were born 1862-1885.I have managed to track Peter, Mary, Anne, Bridget, Edward, Alice (my g/mother), Anne, and Edward. This family to'd and fro'd from Monaghan and Louth to North Shields where they eventually settled around 1874/5. I have been in touch with a Hanratty descendant who says he remembers a Fagan and Hanratty family living next to the church in Corduff - but have not confirmed this information. I would be ever so pleased to get to the bottom of this evasive family and look forward to your reply.
