    3. Hi! I am just beginning my search for family in Co. Monaghan. My 2X great grandmother, Mary McGinnis, was born in Co. Monaghan according to the baptismal record of her oldest child. US death records for Mary and her three sisters provide their father's name as either William or John McGinnis and their mother's name as Ann Kearns. Mary was born about 1838 in Ireland. She married John James O'Connell in New Orleans in 1859. Their first child, Susan Ann was born there in 1860. They moved to Mobile before October 1863 and their other three children were born there. Mary is buried in Mobile. Bridget Elizabeth was b abt 1841 in Ireland. She married first William Mullhall and second Martin D. Kenny. She also is buried in Mobile. Ellen was b abt 1843 in Ireland. She married Christopher Foley and is buried in Mobile. Rose was b abt 1848 or 1849. Most records indicate that she was born in the US. She married William R. Ward and is buried in Mobile. John/William, Ann, and their four daughters may have immigrated to New Orleans, LA. I have not found the record. Denise

    1. [MONAGHAN] MONAGHAN ROLL CALL BROWN CORNACARROW
    2. Roisin Lafferty
    3. Searching for descendants of Hugh Brown Cornacarrow, Aughnamullen parish Castleblayney. Hugh died in 1877 age 90 so born about 1777. There is no record of his place of birth Hugh was a Presbyterian. His wife may have been Catherine who died in 1870 at Cornacarrow. Four of his children were: Henry who was married date unkn own, (Henry had at least one son named Hugh(b before 1877); Thomas( who was involved in several petty court cases), Betty (Elizabeth) who married Brian Mohan and moved to Waterford Ireland; and Catherine to whom Hugh bequeathed his farm and possessions. Catherine married Arthur Cumskey and lived on the farm. There is a possibility that Hugh may have been connected with the mills at Cornacarrow as a note in the Pre Griffiths survey shows him leasing 12 acres 3 roods of land at plot no 25 with an added note "house not finished Hugh brown holds ?? small fileld marked thus on the map as a doucier for damage of the mills but not liable for tax for two fields". Would like to find additional family members or Hughs burial place or if presbyterian burials took place within a parish. Roisin

Dear All I am looking for info on JOHN MARTIN and his parents, etc.  >John Martin was born in Derryrusk on 7 May 1880 and married Mary Jane Hawthorn(e) in January 1918 in Aughnamullen (various spellings). John's father  was also a John born, I think, in 1845 in Co Monaghan, and who died inDerryroosk, (a spelling variation) on 21 Oct 1907. John's mother was Susan Johnston who was born, I think,  in 1849 in Co Monaghan. >MARY JANE HAWTHORNE'S was born in Tattybrack on 20 Nov 1897. Her parents were David John Hawthorne born 1861 in Tattybrack and Mary Jane King born on 27 May 1860 possibly in or near Castleblaney. >David John Hawthorne's parents were John Hawthorn(e) born 13 June 1816 and died 14 June 1900 in Tattybrack, and Sarah (surname unknown) born 1823 (?), married in Cootehill before 1848, and died in Tattybrack 11 Mar 1910. I think John Hawthorne's father was a Thomas Hawthorne. >MARY JANE KING'S parents were Thomas King and Eliza Anne Irwin. Thomas King was born in 1838(?) and died in Drumhillagh on 28 Oct 1871. Eliza Irwin was born in 1836 in Aughnamullen, married in Castleblaney in 1855 and died before 1871. I think that Thomas King's father was John King who died 4 Feb 1863 in Corbrack. I think that Eliza Irwin's father was a Samuel Irwin. >The Martins were Church of Ireland. 1. [MONAGHAN] Roll Call- WARD and MURPHY
    2. Rick Waggener
    3.   The information I have is that my ancestor JOHN WARD, was born in about 1800, in Monaghan Co., Ireland. I can only presume that his wife ANN MURPHY was also born there also, in about 1804, and that they also presumably married there in the early 1820's. I know that they were in Pennsylvania, USA in 1829, so presumably they immigrated in the late 1820's. They eventually settled in the "Stoney Creek" Irish settlement in Exeter Township, Monroe Co., Michigan, USA. From her death certificate, Ann's parents were named BERNARD and MARGARET MURPHY, and I can only similarly presume they were also in Monaghan Co. I also believe Ann had a brother named John Murphy, who I believe also settled in "Stoney Creek." Rick Waggener Walnut Creek, California, USA sequoia@pacbell.net

    3. If this were my research, I would search the Tithe A for Co. Monaghan. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/ For example there are 'only' 297 Kelly families listed at that time. I searched on Owen Kelly. In one townland there are Owen, Jas, Luke, and Philip in Drumacrew, Clontibret. Think Philip is unusual, as is William for a Catholic family. Search on Welsh also. There are only 47 of that names. Could be Walsh - only 55. Look at other names in the townland. Back to the ship's lists and see if there are others of names in the townland - or nearby. Yes, young children did sail w/o parents - perhaps relatives or neighbors. On his citizenship papers - or petition for citizenship, who were his sponsors? That is often a clue. There were emigration agents in cities in the US. Someone in the US could have purchased a ticket for him. Not sure that any of those records are about. In Rhode Island, US Army agents went to Ireland to hire workers for Fort Adams, 1824 and continued at irregular intervals until 1857. There may have been other similar events, i.e. for the canals in the US and Canada. Someone may have come for work, and brought along young Owen. He was almost working age!!! Many wounded from the US Civil War had pensions. That is also a resource. A widow would petition after her husband's death. I have a Kelly from Co. Monaghan who came to RI in the early 1850'ties. Mary Kelly, father Peter(?) married Patrick Connolly of Clontibret. Hard with both names!! Lots for a rainy day searching! Regards, Ann
