Hi Lorraine, I do a lot of research through my local FHC. I've found using the Family History Library Catalog on-line at the LDS website invaluable. If you haven't visited this site, www.familysearch.org , I highly recommend it. From the main web page select Browse Categories, then Libraries, and then Family History Library Catalog. You can use various search criteria to locate film/fiche, then print out the film number(s), and order them at your local FHC (if they don't have them on-site). With regards to your records of interest, I found that the LDS has copies of these records. They were originally kept in the NARA. They are 900+ films of St. Albans District records from 1895 to 1954. Fortunately, there are Soundex index films which makes your job much easier. To locate the Soundex film that you're interested in go to the LDS website as I described. Select All Searches, then Author Search. Type in the following author: United States. Immigration and Naturalization Service You'll find the following title in the search results: St. Albans District manifest records of aliens arriving from foreign contiguous territory : arrivals at Canadian border ports from January 1895 to June 30, 1954 ; Indexes (Soundex), 1895-1952 Select this and then select the View Film Notes button. You can then find the film number of interest in the following pages. If you have problems or questions, let me know. Regards, Eric Strennen Researching: STRENNEN, STREENAN, SREENAN

I would like to check the Border Crossing Records from Canada to the US for the year 1942. If someone on the list has looked into these records please let me know. I checked with my Family History Centre and they did not know where to look for them. Thank you. Lorraine
Does anybody have any information on the immigration of any Garlands from Ireland to Canada in the 1800s? Thank You. John
Thank you for your reply about the LDS film index. I thought I was sharing information with someone else reading this list. Helen & William Turner hbturnso@ucnsb.net New Smyrna Beach, Florida
Sojourner means visitor to the parish . Reply: Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that it meant a traveling salesperson of some sort when I was writing it to the List etc. Why would they put that on a marriage record under Rank or Profession of Father? Their writing is hard to understand. It could be soldier. I've been looking for this 1775-80 born James JACKSON for months and now I really may be in the wrong County. He probably died in Monaghan County, but may have been born somewhere else. This is my reply to the person who I wrote to personally when he let me know he had a James JACKSON who died at his sons home in Monaghan County. After a long explaining of my research in other County's and how we were connected to JACKSON. ========================== My questions to you is did your Henry JACKSON have a brother Thomas? and was your Henry related to Andrew JACKSON USA former president? Our Alice Jackson who married William TURNER is the one who handed that bit of information down about how she was somehow related to Andrew JACKSON.(The former USA President who parents were from Ireland) ======================================== I will leave the list now for I have no other interest here and I am truly sorry for I was honestly researching a James JACKSON, but while I was writing privately to a person thought I would mention the other which I never wanted to mention on a list again. James's son, Thomas, I am sure was also born in another County. Helen & William Turner hbturnso@ucnsb.net USA
If you haven't already, you should rent the LDS film Index to Irish Marriages for 1848. It will give you the registry office, volume and page on which this record was recorded. Then you can order the film with the actual record which has much more info: occupation of both spouses, their ages, the townland they are from. Occupation of their fathers. The place of marriage, what type of service, and who performed it. (Or you can order a photocopy of the record without ordering the actual film) Good luck, Joan > I thought with some of us researching James JACKSON this was a > interesting marriage registration in Ireland. I have found a few old Marriage Licenses from the Perogative Court - [Betham Extracts] and thought I'd pass them on to the Monaghan List. These are the old and hard to find documents that we are always looking for in Ireland. I didn't change any spellings. I apologize in advance for some unreadable names and placenames. It's the best I could do with some very poor handwriting on the documents. I did trace the handwriting on the hard to read names, and if it's your person, I'll try to explain what I saw. To you Jackson people: My great-great grandfather was Hugh Wellington Flack, born about 1797 in Ballybay. He had a sister Jane who married a Jackson. The family came to New York state and settled there. If any of you have a Jane Flack who married a Jackson, I'd love to hear from you. I haven't found Jane in US. Marie Forehan leonamf@wpa.net
I am looking for info on my gg grandparents, Robert Scott born Oct. 23, 1804 Monaghan Co., married Margaret Hanna, born June 19, 1817 in Monaghan Co. Margaret's father John George Hanna was born in 1780 in Monaghan Co. They came to Ontario Canada, but I do not have any details of when. Thanks, Heather
Dear Jack, You must be the only other one researching James JACKSON. Well how great that he had eight children. I had found the James JACKSON & Mary KIDD marriage in the http://www.familysearch.org & thought of the two I found this might be the most likely in Armagh County 3 March 1798. I also found the Christening of a Henry JACKSON 19 Apr 1811 born to James JACKSON & Mary KIDD Clones, Monaghan, Ireland In February of this year I was told of a film #1279354- item #5 of a JACKSON Family in Armagh County. This person was looking for William JACKSON & possiably had a Thomas in her family. In the 1881 British Census I found our Thomas JACKSONs son James JACKSON born 1842 in Stalybridge, Cheshire County (the same place as his sister Alice was born who married a TURNER)& he married a Martha ? They had two children in that census. Charles JACKSON born 1873 & James JACKSON born 1876 and also he had two Stepsons listed William WYATT & Anne WYATT. ===================== Another thing mentioned on Thomas JACKSON & Elizabeth SMITH marriage was that his father James JACKSON was a SOJOURN .(I do not know if they were trying to say Soldier) ====================== Since you told me about Henry JACKSON I did find a Henry JACKSON married to Mary Ann White 18 Oct. 1833 . Place Kilcrow Church, Nr Rockcurry, Monaghan, Ireland. -------- A Christening of a Henry JACKSON 28 Jan. 1854 in Clones, Monaghan, Ireland born to Henery William Jackson & Ellen Jane. ----------------- Our Thomas JACKSON was born according to the 1861 British Census in 1799. Since I think they might have been living in Lancashsire County for the 1851 Census after their Manchester marriage I may try to find that census of them. ======= Also a Thomas JACKSON was married to a Hannah BEALE 29 April 1681. Place, Clery, Donagh, Monaghan, Ireland. ======= Pre genealogy Library book, the following individuals owned one acre or more of land in Co. Monaghan,Ireland during the 1870's. 1. Henry Jackson, address Brackley, Ballybay, owned 51 acres 2. Henry Jackson, address Cara, Clones, owned 737 acres. 3. John Jackson, address Allagesh, Scotstown, owned 4 acres. 4. John Jackson, address Cremorne, Ballybay, owned 63 acres. 5. John Jackson, address Reps of, address Dublin, owned 80 acres. ============ I do not know if we are researching the same James JACKSON & in our ancestors his son Thomas JACKSON. Did your James have a son Thomas around 1799? Thank you for your reply again. This is really all I know of our Thomas & James JACKSONs. Looking for information on Denis Shevlin and unknown wife and children Denis, Patrick, two unknown sisters and possibly a son Thomas were born in the late 1820s to early 1830s. At least some of the children were born in Castleblayney and the family migrated to the US during the famine. the three sons were blacksmiths in the US. I will be visiting in October and any help would be appreciated. thanks, Pat
I have a James JACKSON b. 1774/75 in Cloncorn, Clones. He married Mary KID of Keady 12 MAR 1798. They had eight children. Let me know if you want more detail. Jack Burchenal
