Yes, my own children In Oz were baptised at 4 and 2 years ( double ceremony). Our local minister was not impressed with my irregular attendance at church and refused to baptised my first born at the usual 6 -12 weeks. It was not till a family connection put me in touch with a Minister working in another parish who beleived all children have their own lives to live and welcomed any new 'Christians to the fold'. I also know that when I was 'Confirmed' at 14yrs there were several of our group attending the 'lessons prior to Confirmation' that had to be 'Baptised/ Christened' to meet the obligations of the Rites of Confirmation. Baptism is a church commitment not a legal obligation. ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Smyth <smyth@nc.rr.com> To: <IRL-MONAGHAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 01, 2000 8:52 AM Subject: [MONAGHAN~] Age of Baptism in Monaghan circa 1820? > Sue Marcus has been posting information about Wallace baptisms in Monaghan > in the first decades of the 19th century. Dear Listers, My ancestors of the above surname came to Australia in 1856 from Monaghan, though Edward GRAHAM was born in Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone in 1836. They were Presbyterian. I am trying to find out why with a name that is obviousy of Scottish origin, they would have ended up in Ireland. Does anyone know? Great....sounds like something I should have under my EVASIVE Graham's. Hi Jenny. Your Graham ancestor could have come to Ireland as part of the 'planting' of Ireland with Scots and English in the 17th or 18th century, or as one of Cromwell's soldiers. He might have come as part of the effort to establish the linen industry in Ireland. Anita
Regarding the 1690 question: In 1688 William of Orange went to England to win the throne from his father-in-law, James II. James fled to Ireland, where he based a counter-attack in 1689 to win back the throne of England. Forces of William of Orange landed in Ireland, where in 1690 the two sides met at the Battle of the Boyne. James was defeated. Catholics vs. Protestants, you know, and that battle resonates in Irish history since. Anita

I recently found out that my gg grandmother Margaret Hanna ( born 1817) was born in Smithboro Monaghan Ireland. Her parents were John George Hanna and Eleanor Teel. She came to Ontario Canada and married a Robert Scott who was from Monaghan County, Ireland. Does any one have any info on this family, or can tell me about Smithboro. Many thanks, Heather

Mary, I have found that the McNaney, (McEneny, McNeany, McEnaney, etc.) all come originally from Monaghan. I am trying to find a reputable researcher in Ireland to sort them out. What I have found out through our oral history, is that a group of brothers traveled from Monaghan to Cobh or Cork where they caught a "coffin" ship to NY, traveling in steerage. As such there may be no record of their crossing until they get to Ellis Island. It is then thought that they traveled to upstate NY and worked as farm hands until they saved enough to spread out. My family bought a homestead that is now a highway and the other brother went in all directions. Unfortunately I don't have the names of all the brothers yet. But with the propensity of the Irish to keep certain names in the family I am looking for the names, William, John, Patrick, Henry and Edward. Obviously there may be others but these are names that repeat in the family.
