    3. Hello Krisha. I too am looking for folk from Ballybay, Co. Monaghan in the time span just prior to 1845. James and John Marshall arrived in Upper Canada and James took up land in 1845 in Manvers Township, Durham County. I wonder if they appear in your documents. Many thanks Fred

    1. [MONAGHAN~] Re: [MONAGHAN] Surname LISTER
    2. Joan Hill
    3. Hi, Jayne Ann. I've been saving your info, so next time I went to my FHC I could do a little research for you. My FHC has Griffiths Valuation, and indexes of b,m,d for Ireland. I started with marriages(on the assumption that your Listers were protestant, Catholic records don't start til 1865) and searched 1852-1862. As I had guessed, Lister was a very rare name, only 1-2 marriages per year. The name seemed to occur in only 3 areas, Monaghan, Newry and Banbridge registration areas. I took down all marriages in Monaghan county, as these are very likely related to your ancestor.. 1859 George & Mary Lister married in Monaghan district Book 8 P.225. The referencea were the same for both of them, which means either they married each other, or there was a double marriage and thus they are on the same page. 1856 Margaret Lister (or Knox) Castleblaney Book 3 P.407 The "or Knox" means she was probably a widow, and either her maiden name or married name was Lister. The Castleblaney location and the name Margaret are awfully suggestive - perhaps an aunt of your Margaret? 1857 Mary Monaghan B.8 p. 252 1861- Ann Jane Monaghan B. 8 P.233 Births: 1865 Mary Monaghan Book 18 p.278 1867 Margaret Monaghan B.13 p.278 The cluster of Listers in Monaghan District makes me wonder if perhaps that's where the Lister's were from, and that Margaret's birth was in Castleblaney because that's where her father had gone to live. Don't know whether you want to spend the money, but the parish record for the Episcopal Church in Castleblaney exists and resides a PRONI, the archives for N. Ireland. The original may still be at the parish church. Perhaps you could write there for a lookup of Margaret's birth. Even though the marriage of Margaret's parents was not found (unless he's that George) I would recommend ordering the films with the actual Lister marriage records, as they contain valuable information. Name, age, occupation, townland or the spouses, father of each, and father's occupation. Also the church or location where the marriage was performed. You ought to be able to find the film numbers for the marriage books online at <http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp> Look under Vitals or Civil Registration for Ireland. BTW, the Householders Index for Muckno Parish (where Castleblaney is), and Griffiths Valuation for Castleblany town did not show any Lister. Good luck, Joan Jayne-Ann wrote: > Greetings All; > > I've just joined and here is the scant info I have about my Irish g grandmother. > > Her name was Margaret Lister b. 25 Jan 1859 and she was from Castleboney (sp?), County Monaghan. 3. Sorry, no McAdams on my source. I am looking at a copy of the Clogher record. An essay written by Dr. Patrick J. Duffy "Assisted Emigration from the Shirley Estate 1843-54" It's about 60 pages long and lists names of tenants on the Shirley Estate that were "assisted" in their emigration. The tales are so sad to read as this was the famine years. Also included is some correspondence from the administration of the Estate showing how hundreds of families were paid to leave. The entire Shirley Estate Collection is at PRONI. It is a very large collection. My source does not include all of the possible names.
