Monaghan, and received helpful advice as to the likely parishes. Thankyou all. Since then I have obtained a copy of Luke John MARTIN's marriage registration (he married here in Canada) which gives his birthplace as Killark, and his age as 26 in 1918, which would put his birthdate in 1892. Also, his parents are listed as Thomas MARTIN, farmer, Catholic, and Mary LAMB. Is there someone on the list who may have access to the necessary records, or who can advise me as to where I should next look in order to obtain birth records? Many thanks, Beverly

    1. [MONAGHAN~] McGill/Magill County Monaghan
    2. Penny
    3. Hi all, I've been lurking for a while, and thought I'd post a branch with which I've come to a standstill. James McGill/Magill married Jane Lawson. They had 7 daughters and 1 son. The only names I have for their children so far, are: Ellen (c. 1811- 1880) married John Bailey (Native of Donagh County Monaghan - parents John Bailey and Mary Boyle). Jane (c. 1814- 1879) married William Gordon (Native of Belfast - parents David & Mary Gordon) - my Gt Gt Gt grandparents. Anne (? - 1898) married William Waugh. James McGill (c. 1787 - 1865) was the son of Henry and Sarah McGill, and Jane Lawson (c.1784-1861) was the daughter of Samuel and Jane Lawson. James death certificate, and Ellen's shipping papers state that they were born in County Monaghan, but no place is recorded. Ellen and her husband, migrated to Australia in 1840, followed by Jane and her husband in 1842, then Anne who married in Australia in 1850, and finally James & Jane came out in 1857. I have not been able to find any information on the other 4 daughters or the son. I look forward to hearing from someone who may be able to fill in some gaps. I will be glad to provide details about these families in Australia. Regards, Penny Canberra Australia

    3. Hi Betty Its' possible your Ann and my Alice were related the dates match up. My Alice McGahy married Thomas Handley( later spelt Hanley) on the 3rd of May 1847 in Adelaide Sth Australia. I have obtained 3 certificates>>>> marriage certificate (as above) baptism in 1849 of Thomas Hanley f.Thomas Hanley m. Alice McGye birth in 1857 of Emmeline Hanley f. Thomas Hanley m.Alice McGahey Their children were listed in 1857> Hugh, Nancy, Thomas, Francis, Rosanna(my G Grandmother) Hugh and Emmeline. Alice lists her place of birth as County Monaghan Ireland. There have been several different spelling for McGahy it could sound like McKoy. Do you know if that name is common in Monaghan. Keep in touch and we can exchange info.
