Hi Listers, I just joined the list so I thought I would post my family and see if anyone else out there is researching the same line. My McMahon family is from Carrickmacross. The family immigrated to America to Huron Co., Ohio. Here is a write-up on my Great-grandfather and family. Please read through to see if you might be related. JAMES McMAHON, a well-known agriculturist of Huron County, was born May 17, 1837, in County Monaghan, Ireland, where he passed his childhood and received a moderate education. As he approached manhood he determined to seek a new home where he could have broader chances for accumulating money, and more freedom in his ideas and manner of living. With this in view he emigrated from Ireland in 1853, and immediately after his arrival in America located in Ohio, where he began his business career as a farm laborer on the estate of Steven Sawyer. The country at that date was in a wild state, thoroughly undeveloped and but thinly populated, farming was hard work; but determination to succeed, coupled with unusual energy, enabled our subject to persevere in the work for eight years. At the end of that time he had accumulated enough money to buy two horses and rent a small tract of land, and in a few years bought seventy-two acres of land, two and one half miles southeast of Bellevue. He has continued to add to his farm until it now comprises 200 acres of highly cultivated soil, and yields him a comfortable income. On October 10, 1866, Mr. McMahon married Miss Bridget Perry, who was born in 1848 in Toronto, Canada, a daughter of James Perry, a successful farmer of Erie county, who died in 1880, at the age of sixty-four. Their marriage has been blessed with eight children, viz.: Rose (who married Bernard Brady, of Portland, Oreg.), James, (who lives in Bellevue and is married), Mary, Susie, Agnes, Eddie, Julia and Isabella, all of whom are living. Mrs. McMahon died January 17, 1882, deeply mourned by her family and friends. The subject of this biographical memoir is an example of what energy and frugality can accomplish. He commenced life in a new country without either money or friends, and today has an abundance of both. He devotes his attention exclusively to farming, and principally to raising wheat and corn. He is a Democrat in politics, and served as road supervisor for a number of years. He and his family are members and liberal supporters of the Catholic Church. James McMahon, father of our subject, was born in Ireland and lived there until 1861, at which time he came with his wife to America, settling in Ohio. He was a farmer in the old country, and always devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits up to the time of his death. He commenced work in Ohio with no money, but succeeded in renting a farm in Lyme township, where he was highly respected by his neighbors, and where his wife died. He had six children as follows: Thomas, formerly of Deerfield, Mich., who died December 25, 1887; Mary, who died in New York in 1839; James, subject of sketch; Mrs. Owen Kelly and Peter McMahon, of Deerfield, Mich., and Patrick, residing three miles southwest of Bellevue. From: Commemorative Biographical Record Of the Counties of Huron and Lorain, Ohio, Volume I, Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co, 1894 If any of this sounds familiar, I would love to hear from you! Mary
Elizabeth Shelby and I would like all to take a look at www.mcnaney.com. We know the site needs work especially in the margins in the discussion section. But we would like to hear from anyone with constructive criticism and advice. Also, we are trying to plan a reunion of all family members with a thought to making it open to all who can trace their rots to Monaghan county. Gary McNaney
Rose, It seems as if maybe I'm not getting all the postings to the Monaghan list, as I have no idea what a CMC Database is. Could you please forward the original post to me? Thanks so much. Thank you so so Much. It will be a wonderful place for those seeking information from Ireland. Keep up the great work! Rose C
Folks... Need to rry this again, the first messsage got garbled..... I have the following information about my Lennon family from Co. Monaghan. Would like to know if anyone has any connection, or information? PETER LENNON MARRIED CATHERINE WALSH Aughnamullen East (also called Lough Egish) Church Clogher Diocese County Monaghan, Ireland September 27, 1850 Their witnesses were Edward McMahon and Mary McMahon. We believe that this couple is our ancestor, and that they had a son James (who we know is our ancestor) was born around 1860 or 1861. >From Aughnamullen East Church records, there were two Lennon children born around that time, one on October 28, 1860, son of Peter and Mary (not Catherine). The name is very blurry on the record, but it looks like it could be Bernard. Another Lennon child was baptized on March 23, 1859, whose parents were James Lennon and Anna Moan or Sloan. This child's first name was completely obliterated. JAMES LENNON MARRIED CATHERINE REILLY Aughnamullen East (Lough Egish) Church Clogher Diocese County Monaghan, Ireland October 18, 1880 Catherine Reilly of Creve was the daughter of Francis Reilly of Creve, a worker at Creve. Marriage records list Catherine as 21 years of age, a Spinster. James was listed as a worker at Creve, and a bachelor, age 19. Their marriage certificates (civil and religious) are attached. The marriage was witnessed by John Dignam and Mary Reilly. The name Dignam plays an interesting part in the history, because the Dignam Family owned the flax mills in Creve, which was the place of employment for James' and Catherine's fathers. James also worked at Dignam's Mills as a scutcher. A scutcher was a person who broke off the outer shell of the flax plant, the bark, leaving only the flax fiber to be processed. A scutcher worked on a piece work basis, and sometimes moved around from mill to mill if the piece work pay rate was higher in another mill. In order to attract good workers, the Dignam's erected a row of one story, three room houses called "Dignam's Slates." The name "slate" came from the fact that these houses had slate roofs, not thatched. If a mill owner had "a good man," then he would offer him use of the house at reasonable or no cost. The houses were close to the mill. James and Catherine Reilly Lennon had five sons: Peter born August 28, 1881, baptized in Aughnamullen East Church on August 30. The sponsors were Frank Reilly and Elizabeth Reilly. (Surely Catherine's family) Francis born April 4, 1885, baptized Aughnamullen East on April 5, sponsors were Francis Reilly and Mary Ann Lenon (again, probably relatives of James and Catherine) Thomas born March 24, 1887, baptized in Latton Church (Aughnamullen West) William John born January 4, 1889, baptized January 4, St. Patrick's Church (Tullycorbett Parish). Sponsors were John Mc Quillan and Catherine Mc Mahon. William John came to America in 1912. James John born April 21, 1893 in Drumfaldra, baptized in St. Patrick's Church (Tullycorbett Parish). As part of this entry, it should be noted that Catherine Reilly appears with several names in official records. On her civil marriage certificate her name is Cathain. On her son William John's marriage certificate to Mary Terese Mc Nulty, he lists his mother's name as Anna Catherine. Other than being the daughter of Francis Reilly, I found no information in church records indicating Catherine's baptism or her mother's name. Searches of other church's records are planned. >Thank You, Pat! > What is "area (04)"? Are these people who are now living in these >areas?...in 1996-97? Thank you for taking time to respond to my email! >Gratefully, >Trudy > Area (04) is a telephone area code used in the phone directories. I have a CDROM disk for all of the Republic, for the years 1996/97. It has the phone numbers and the addresses for residential and businesses. (I located my relatives by writing to some addresses from the phonebooks.) Here are the rest of them for the Republic; There are 7 phonebooks for the Republic which includes a golden pages book for Co. Dublin. These directory codes are aproximate as I have to refer to an outline only map in my phonebook, having no details on it, and estimate which counties might be within the areas from another detailed map. The areas don't follow county lines with the exceptions being co. Cork and co. Dublin, so some counties are in two different areas. (07/09) are in one book and that area is of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Galway. (09) is south of Donegal Bay. (06) Includes Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary. (05) Includes Tipp., Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly. (02) Appears to be just co. Cork. (01) Co. Dublin. The area surrounding it is (04). (04) Monaghan, Cavan, Louth, Meath, Westmeath, Longford, Kildare, Wicklow. Also small portions of Leitrim, Roscommon, Offaly, and Wexford. ------------------------------------- Northern Ireland is area (08) Patrick Traynor, in California's gold-rush country. tray@jps.net

Dear Listers, I'm re-posting this because apparently the list was down last time I sent it. On 10 Aug I sent a query to the list looking for information about the birthplace of Luke John MARTIN of Co. Monaghan, and received helpful advice as to the likely parishes. Thankyou all. Since then I have obtained a copy of Luke John MARTIN's marriage registration (he married here in Canada) which gives his birthplace as Killark, and his age as 26 in 1918, which would put his birthdate in 1892. Also, his parents are listed as Thomas MARTIN, farmer, Catholic, and Mary LAMB. Is there someone on the list who may have access to the necessary records, or who can advise me as to where I should next look in order to obtain birth records? Many thanks, Beverly
Hello, Does anyone know where I would look for the obituary of a Robert Ellis Bailie who died in County Monaghan in Dec., 1911? Thank You Cathy

Your posting interests me. In our family we have John Glenn who marred Bridget Magrath (sometimes Mc Grath) somewhere in Ireland. Bridget Magrath Glenn d. 8 Mar 1880 (from Death Rec Bk) and is buried at St Ambrose Cathedral Cem. in Des Moines, IA. She was 45 and died of "lung fever". These people have been impossible to trace. I have looked for Glenn's in Buffalo and found nothing. John Glenn and Bridget had a son James John Glenn b. Jul 1863 in BUFFALO, ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. Relatives have said they also had a Patrick, b. abt 1842; a Thomas W. b. Dec 1853, and Martin G. Glenn b. about 1860 with James John in 1863. This info came from a d-in-l of Thomas W Glenn in Spalding Nebraska. She wasn't sure but thought it was right. Martin W. Glenn is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. We lost our first child of 20 months and my f-in-law, Martin Bede Glenn made arrangements for her burial at Calvary. He noticed the Martin G Glenn and the fact that there was no headstone. Believing it was the uncle he was named after he paid for it but I have never been able to establish who this Martin is. Cemetery will only tell me the body was shipped in from elsewhere. The State of Caslifornia tells me they have no record. I'm interested to know if any of this sounds like a long lost relative of yours? Who are the Glenn's you have? I am also searching for info on my ggrandfather, Beatty Graham who was born in Clones, County Monaghan in 1806.....maybe it is a small world! The CMC record project (http://www.cmcrp.net )is a collection of databases of births, marriages, death, cemetery, and property records for Ireland. Currently, they cover the counties of Cork, Limerick, Mayo, Tipperary and Waterford. Additionally, we have a GenConnect Ireland surname query board we have just started. Last month it became a sponsored project of the Ireland GenWeb. While just beginning, it hopes to eventually provide some substantial web resources to the Ireland genealogy community on line. This month, through the efforts of Janet Crawford, we are beginning to bring records from Griffith's Index to the Tipperary section. We would welcome you visit, add your ancestors name to our surname query board; or even better, if you have records from these counties to share, to add them to the database.
