    2. In response to the roll call, here are my County Monaghan ancestors that I am researching: Patrick McKenna married Ann McGahey in 1825 in Co. Monaghan. Their children, all born in Ireland, are: James McKenna b:1830 d: 1900 married Eliza McCarthy Ellen McKenna b: May 8, 1832 d: January 25, 1917 married Joseph Hagerty, December 24, 1856 in Hastings, Minnesota Ann McKenna b: 1841 married John Hagerty (Joseph's brother), 1857 in Rice County, Minnesota Mary McKenna married Thomas Loftus, 1860 in Rice County, Minnesota The McKenna family originally settled in Providence, Rhode Island. James was the first to move to Shieldsville, Rice County, Minnesota. Ellen, my gggrandmother, followed him and the rest of the family followed her. Pretty sketchy, but at this point it is all I know. 3. Dear Jane: Thank you for all the information you provide on a regular basis, and now for moderating the list. I have a bit of a mystery that I wondered if anyone could help me with. My father was working on our family history before he died and he had listed my great-grandparents as being John Cairns (maybe spelled Kearns) and Elizabeth Pogue, of Clones, Co. Monaghan. My aunt says they were John and Mary Cairns of Newbliss, Co. Monaghan. Family legend says that great-grandmother had worked as cook at the Rossmore estate. Both my father and aunt had a detailed list of birthdates for the five sons who survived infancy. They moved to Belfast sometime in the 1880's or 1890's and evidently my grandparents had died sometime before 1900, when my grandfather was 10-12 years old. Unfortunately, they don't show up in the vital records for either Clones or Monaghan. There is a marriage of a John Kearns and Elizabeth Malone in Clones but the family structure and names are so different that it can't be the same family. Then I thought I would try tracking back my grandfather, as the 1911 Census gives his birthplace as Belfast. I wrote to the records office, giving his exact birth date in 1888, and they wrote back and said there was no entry with those particulars anywhere between 1886 and 1890. The only thing that might help is that they all - John Cairns, and several of his sons - worked for the railway. I am wondering if anyone has done research at the Railway archives in Dublin and might have some suggestions as to how to go about this from a distance? Also, any ideas as to why my great-grandfather and his family wouldn't be listed in the vital records when my father was so sure that they came from Clones? And any ideas about where else to look? Any and all suggestions and information would be appreciated. Regards, Rosemary Cairns Yellowknife, NT, Canada

    1. Re: CONNOLLY-in Carrickmacross
    2. I also have some kind of vague connection to Connolly or Connelly from Monaghan. My grandmother, Annie McCabe, came from Greaghlone, Co. Monaghan in early 1890s to San Francisco. Stayed at first with aunts, named Connelly or Connolly and Donahue, or Donohue, who ran a big market on Market street in SF.Suspect that funding for trip was from Aunts. 3 older sisters and a brother, had also come by same process. Mary, Margaret, Bridget and Michael. One of the Connolly ?Connelly descendants went on to become the Archbishop in San Francisco in the 1930s, 1940s. Nancy Praetzel

    1. CONNOLLY-in Carrickmacross
    2. Brad Chapman and Lisa Lawrence
    3. Searing for Elizabeth Connolly. She was born in 1889. I know that she left Carrickmacross, Monaghan, Ireland in the same year that the Titanic was lost. In fact, she was to sail on it, but had a last minute change of plans. I know that she went to Canada, and settled in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. As far as the family knows, she came alone and had no contact with Ireland after she reached Canada. The family also believes that she had a brother that went to the United States. Her father was John Connolly. I feel like I am searching for a needle in a haystack with nice common names like these! At one point someone on the list mentioned that I could probably write to get Elizabeth's birth certificate from the Vital Records Office. However, I never found out how to do that. I live in the United States. If someone could help me with learning how to do that, I would really appreciate it. No, I didn't say do it for me! I'm just asking for advice on how to do things so I'll learn how it is done. Thanks a lot, Lisa

    1. WEIR
    2. Hi everyone I am slowly piecing this family together, but still have not been able to establish a location within Co Monaghan from which they came. Happy to share info with anyone who finds a connection: Lancelot WEIR and his wife Margaret and at least two children, Mary b. 1828 and Robert b. 1830 emigrated to Canada in 1837 and settled in Hamilton Township, Northumberland County (just north of what is now Cobourg, Ontario). There are several WEIR families in the area in the 19th century censuses, so some of Lancelot's brothers may also have come. The religion varies from census to census from C of I, to Methodist, to Bible Christian. Patty in snowy Ottawa

    3. Hi all, I am not certain if this avenue of research has been mentioned recently - if so, pardon the repeat. It was recently suggested to me that I check the Archives of the Scotch-Irish list for my ROGERS and MORRISON families. (Yes, *all* letters to this list get archived and they are indexed by not only subject, but by content.) All one has to do to check out *any* Rootsweb list is to go to their Archives at: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Then type in the letters of the list name, in this case, for this list: IRL-MONAGHAN-L Then, check all of the years listed. (Scotch-Irish has been around for more years in this case.) Not expecting much (Oh, me of little faith), I typed in Emyvale and up popped a person's post from 1998! And..... she was looking for ROGERS in Emyvale. I wrote; her e-mail address was valid; I have just heard today and we will see what we can come up with together. Hopefully, this story will have an even happier ending. So.... don't forget to check out those posts and also all the GenForum Surname pages as well. That's at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ I was able to give a gentleman the names of his ancestors - He thought he would never find the maiden name of his ggg grandmother, but thanks to deeds and other research which I had done, he now knows. Hopefully these tips will help someone find their ancestors as well. 3. http://www.seanruad.com/ Hi If you enter Carmeen in the search engine at the above url you will see that it is a townland in Ireland (I think near Newry), so that may just add to the confusion or may provide an answer. Also try the Griffiths Valuation to see where others (brothers uncles?) of the same name were living after he left - perhaps they used to live near the same area. Jack W -----Original Message----- From: Donna E. Ristenbatt [mailto:der@redrose.net] Sent: Tuesday, 16 January 2001 14:02 To: IRL-MONAGHAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Migration Patterns I have been trying for years (unsuccessfully thus far) to find some record of my ROGERS and MORRISON families in Ireland. Notes in my grandfather's Bible, as I have stated, have them coming from County Monaghan and specifically from Emyvale. Back in 1846, could someone give me an idea of how they would have travelled to America? I realize this is the beginning of the Great Famine. Would they have walked, gone down a river, to what port, etc. I am really interested in tracing their travelling route. I am fairly certain they came to NYC as a port, because an older brother to my great grandfather had some children in New York and then the rest were born in New Jersey, USA. I have done all my "homework" on this side of the "Pond." Would really like to find some record of them in Northern Ireland. (They apparently "straddled" the current day boundary of County Monaghan and County Tyrone.) Someone mentioned the Tithe Applotment Books. Since Emyvale was in the parish of Donagh, I would imagine that's where the tithe would be recorded, if I understand this correctly? Unfortunately, the LDS Church seems not to have recorded any record for Donagh during that time period - 1823- 1846 when they left. I would love to find some trace of this family in Ireland - any suggestions greatly appreciated as to what "stone" to uncover next. I should mention that they were Presbyterian, most likely Reformed Presbyterian and the PHS in Belfast has not recorded any Reformed or Seceder Presbyterian Churches. I checked out PRONI - am not sure what would be around Emyvale at that time. One last thing, I have learned to check out *all* possible clues. The slightest thing can be the key that unlocks the door. On my grandfather's *cemetery* record, it has he was born Carmeen, Ireland, not Emyvale. Now, I checked Carmeen on the LDS site, and was told no matches. Does that place not exist? Mispelled perhaps? Thank you.
