    1. CLARKIN
    2. AChapman
    3. To the members of the Monaghan list I am looking for information on Michael CLARKIN (born in the late 1700's) of Tydavnet (Barony of Traugh?) County Monaghan. It is my understanding that he left Ireland as an adult with a family some time before 1845. He was married to Ellen CONNOLLY and they were the parents of Patrick, Bridget, Rose and James all born in Tydavnet(there may be others). Patrick was born around 1814 and died in Prince Edward Island (Lot 65, Emyvale), on July 26,1859 at the age of 45. Patrick CLARKIN married Catherine COADY of PEI some time around 1845. Patrick and Catherine had six children one of whom was a daughter Mary (whose name on the church record is spelled CLERKIN) married "Irish" Hugh CAMPBELL at St Joseph's in Kelly's Cross in PEI in 1874. Mary CLERKIN and Hugh CAMPBELL are my great grandparents. I would like info on Michael and Patrick CLARKIN and Ellen CONNOLLY. All I have on Ellen CONNOLLY is that she married Michael CLARKIN in the early 1800's and very likely in Tydavnet. It would also be helpful someone could verify a piece of "history". I have been told that Kelly's Cross and Emyvale in PEI were named for the home towns of the people who came to PEI from County Monaghan. The story also says that the parish priest in Kelly's Cross at St Joseph's Church help arrange and pay for the passage of parishioners to leave Ireland for new homes in PEI. Is there an Emyvale and a Kelly's Cross in County Monaghan and if so can you give me a clue as to where they are? Any help you can provide related to this request will be very well received and if there is any information I might provide from New Hampshire, USA I am more than willing to do so. Annjude Chapman

    1. ARMOUR/ARMSTRONG
    2. Charles Black
    3. I subscribed to the Monaghan list in order to attempt to find information regarding my paternal great grandfather - ARCHIBALD ARMOUR. He reputedly came from County Fermanagh but I have been unable to find any documentation of an Armour family in that County. I did however find an Armour family in Clones, Monaghan and am wondering if there is a connection or if anyone on the list would have any recollection of this name in County Monaghan. My grandmother's parents were Johnston and Jane Armstrong from County Fermanagh and my problem with them is quite different. There are so many Armstrongs there that it is difficult to determine to which family they belong. Shirlie (Armour) Black

    1. Re: MCMAHON-DUFFY-BOYLE-BANIGAN
    2. A few things in your post that occur in my family... probably coicidence but thought I'd pass them along. They are: McMAHON, BOYLE, Ballybay and Rhode Island. I have female McMahon married to my MARTIN family men who were of southern County Monaghan. They immigrated to US in family groups starting in 1823. Initially in the greater Boston area, at least one grandson went to Pawtucket, RI by 1850. Bryan Martin was married in County Monaghan to Catherine McMAHON. he was born before 1800 & may have had a daughter as early as 1813. he emmigrated in 1826 to port of Boston. One of his son's was Dennis MARTIN, who became a fairly well-off currier in Pawtucket. His wife, though born in Scotland, was of Irish parents ... her name was Agnes (Lafferty) Martin. A daughter of ths couple married a Larkin son whose McGOUGH mother was of Ballybay. In a curious genealogical note witten in 1916 by this daughter, Catherine "Kate" (Martin) LARKIN (1854-1928) of Pawtucket, she writes of her mother, "Agnes Martin, wife of Dennis Martin and daughter of Dannel (sic) Lafferty and Agnes or Nancy the called her Boyle." Her handwritting is very clear ... but that passage in her genealogy journal has never made sense to me. She goes on to say, "Agnes Martin was born in Glasgow and mother was born in Tyrone, Ireland and Dannel, the father, was born in Antrim, Ireland" Sadly, this is the very last page of her 91 page journal. I suspect that something caused her to suddenly cease her research about 1917; she died in 1928.

    1. Roll Call: McKee, Ross
    2. Joan Hill
    3. I have two ancestors from Co. Monaghan: 1) John McKee (1817-1879) son of Joseph McKee and Sarah Peacock, probably of Muckno Parish. He had siblings: Jane, Robert, Jemima, David. There were three other siblings unaccounted for. He was a weaver, left Ireland in 1839, and became a gardener and then policeman in New York City. 2) George Ross (1808-1880) parents unknown but possibly Robert and Mary. He was a weaver who emigrated in 1828. He settled in New York City where he became a cotton "manufacturer" - provided materials and equipment to hand loom weavers in return for the finished product at a set price. Left this occupation by Civil War, invested in NY real estate, and before death built Rossmore Hotel on what is now Times Square. Very likely had relatives in NY when he arrived, possibly a Thomas, but no proof. Joan
