    1. My intentions with the roll call.....and..........
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. Every list has a roll call once in a while - and I'd like to thank those of you who have responded, and thanks Al for those pointers on what can be done when people have the info from the Griffiths and Tithes because that was just what was needed. I asked for a roll call for a reason, - it was not just so that people could see who was on the list and who they were looking for. As and from Tuesday I will begin posting lists of names found in the Griffiths and Tithes surname lists for Monaghan. I'm not going to distinguish between which surname posted to the list is from where - if I find a surname in a parish then it will be posted, i just bring a list of surnames with me. It's going to be slow, but what it will do is give those of you who don't know where your ancestors came from in Monaghan an idea of some places to search - parish and estate records. There are other records nad some are on line, some are on cd's and there are various sites to go to in order to make requests of people who do look ups. I'm hoping to show you variations in surnames, it's one thing to ask someone to look up one spelling of a name, when you don't knwo that there are others - it's another thing if you are armed with all the variations on that name - or variations on how the placename was spelled. When I have finished with this surname index - then, I will work my way through what is available re parish or estate records, here in Ireland and what has been filmed by the LDS. I am not familiar with LDS libraries, what they have or don't have. I've heard that not all their films are listed in the on-line catalogue and I have to admit keeping up with oneself no matter how small a web site is very hard work - what I would really appreciate is that if anyone has looked at LDS films which relate to Monaghan - that they would tell me something about them, the condition of parish records, whether the pages can all be read or not, how much information is given by the priest, vicar who kept the record - variations on name and placename spellings, which dates are missing.........anything else you can think of. Please and thanks. I'd like to know of the web sites you have seen which relate to Monaghan and have a good content - the best I know of is Ann Harney's which is at http://www.exis.net/ahd/monaghan/ By good - I mean those which don't give the same old dribble drabble as every other web site - links to here there and everywhere which are the same as are all over the place - I would like to know about those people who are quietly transcribing records and putting them on-line, I want to know about parish history books - which are being published for many counties (i've a friend staying with me and she's producing books galore on where she is interested in - books I'll never see, because they are mainly sold in that county - not here in Dublin). Jane

    1. DUFFY/BURNS - Ancestry Monaghan
    2. Margaret Boyle
    3. Hi all, I am replying through the list as a few members wanted to know the outcome of my enquiry to Ancestry Monaghan re my DUFFY/BURNS families. Suggested parish of origin is INISKEEN - as baptism of one child was found in the R.C. Parish Registers :- "Baptised 5 November 1859 Mary Duffy daughter of Patrick DUFFY and Agnes BURNS. No townland of origin within the parish is listed. The sponsors were Thomas JONES and Anne MURTAGH" No baptismal details were found for the other two children - John and James due to gaps in the registers during the period 1861 - 1863. The marriage record of Patrick and Agnes was not found -marriage records are only extant for INISKEEN from 1839 - 1850. Anyone else researching these names in that area? Regards Margaret Co. Durham, England

    1. Roll Call --- KIERNAN/KEIRNAN, MALCOLM/MEACLIM AND SWANZY
    2. Dick and Mary Kiernan
    3. Looking for information on Keirnan or Kiernan family from County Monaghan (maybe County Femanagh or County Cavan)... My great-grandfather, John Swanzy Kiernan, left Ireland for Canada in 1861 from the Glasslough area: Coolcollid Townland, Parish of Donagh, County Monaghan. At an earlier time, he had lived in the Townland of Naghill, Parish of Drumsnat, County Monaghan. He was a farmer in Drumsnat and a teacher at both Drumsnat and Donagh... He was Church of Ireland... He was a member of the Orange Order in Glasslough in 1846. Also looking for Swanzy and Malcolm/Meaclim from Monaghan (and maybe Fermanagh or Cavan)... John Swanzy Kiernan (or Keirnan), Married Mary Malcolm (or Meaclim or something close) in Drumsnat Parish in County Monaghan in 1834 (at St. Molua, C.I. Church)... Their 10 children were baptized at St. Molua or at St. Salvator, C.I. Church, in Glasslough... It is possible (likely) that John's mother's maiden name was Swanzy (maybe Mary Swanzy ?)Probably connected to the Samuel Swanzy family of the Drumsnat/Kilmore/Clones Parishes and/or the Henry Swanzy family of Clontibret Parish. Samuel Swanzy, Barrister, who may be my GGG Grandfather, is listed as being from Swanville (where is Swanville ???). Samuel Swanzy is also listed as being from Tullycorbet Parish and from County Armagh ??? Thanks Dick Kiernan
