Would appreciate any information on the above names/places with particular regard to the explanation below. I apologise for the long windedness of it, but feel it is necessary in view of circumstances. Thanks in advance John Whiting - Essex During a holiday in June 2006 we visited Monaghan and went to Tydavnet village and Church. We knew that the Trainor family originally came from this area but without knowing exactly where. It was not a particularly successful visit as we were informed by many people we spoke to that Trainor was a common name around there and that to get much further we would need to know the ‘nickname’ of the particular Trainor family we were interested in. Not knowing that information stopped us in our tracks a bit and apart from visiting the Church and attached graveyard we could not see a lot more that we could do. It was also unfortunate that at the time of the visit we were informed by a very helpful lady in the tourist offices that a particularly knowledgeable person, who I think was called Theo McMahon, was currently unwell. We decided that we would not trouble this gentleman at this time. We accordingly took some photos around the graveyard with one or two interesting results. To delve back a little, my wife’s grandfather was a James Trainor, born in Ireland about 1870 (according to his marriage and death certificates) and whose father was an Edward Trainor. It is thought that James had two brothers and two sisters who lived on a ‘ farm’ (but which was probably what we would call a smallholding) but that this farm could not support the whole family, so James went off to seek his future in England where he married a Mary Moan in 1899. James and Mary had numerous children but the two of most interest (genealogically) were the first born, Mary, in 1902 and the seventh born, Thomas, in 1915. It is known that both these children returned to Monaghan on various occasions to the area of their father’s birth near Tydavnet. The specific location is again not known and the following text serves only to indicate that wherever it was, it must have been in the family for some time. With reference to Mary it is known that she went to the USA and the Ellis Island records her as disembarking from the vessel ‘Adriatic’ in the company of a Margaret Trainor on the 4th of November, 1922, arriving from County Monaghan via Liverpool. Mary was 19 years old and Margaret was aged 20. Both girls were 'consigned' to an Aunt, Miss M. Brannigan, who had also paid for their 2nd class cabins. The girls must have been cousins. Miss Brannigan was residing at 219 West 81st Street, New York, NY. It is believed that she (Mary) was subsequently married in USA and had one son. Thomas was obviously much younger than Mary, but it is known that travelled back to Monaghan on regular occasions and for relatively long periods. Long enough in fact to meet and marry a ‘local’ girl, Ann McCaffery (spelling could be different), and they went off to England and brought up their family there. Two particular qualities are remembered by his family, firstly that Tommy was quite a boy for the girls, and secondly that he could run as fast as the rabbits he chased across the farm. Returning to Tydavnet Church graveyard, several graves are attributed to ‘ Trainors’ and, funnily enough, some ‘Moans’. One particular grave has a headstone dedicated to Ellen Trainor who died in August 1941, and Elizabeth Trainor who died in July 1943. No ages are given, but it must be possible that these are two sisters to James (and his two brothers). The headstone also gives the information that it was erected by Edward Trainor of Drumshavera. This information throws up a couple of points of interest. Firstly, although it is unlikely that Edward was the father of James it is possible that he was James’ elder brother. Secondly, and most annoyingly, is our total inability to locate any townland or parish called Drumshavera. Subsequent to sighting this particular headstone we attended at the Registrars office in Monaghan. Despite a very helpful lady who really put herself out to help us we could not locate death certificates for Ellen and Elizabeth. We also pushed our luck to find out if a marriage certificate could be located where a Thomas Trainor married an Ann McCaffery in the area, but again without success. A bit dispirited, we accepted defeat and went back to Dublin for the airport and home. I have since tended to concentrate on other family lines, but now hope for a breakthrough on this family. Thanks for taking the time to read this, Best Regards (mailto:[email protected])
Hi All, I'm helping someone with their McCabe and Connolly family from the Scotstown area, any information would be much appreciated. Michael McCabe married Anne Connolly sometime I would guess around first half of the 1870s as they had children born in Drumsheaver (Tydavnet Parish) Mary 1875, Anne 1878, Margaret 1879, Michael 1881 and Rose 1884, then must have moved to Derrylea (Clones Parish) as they had more children, James 1888, Elizabeth 1890 and another, Michael Joseph, in 1892 (the other Michael possibly died young). The Connolly family is thought to have been in the Smithborough area and Anne Connolly had four sisters who married into Quigley, Sheridan, Boyle and Corrigan families. I think the Church at Urbleshanny may have been the local RC Church as there is a Patrick McCabe of Drumsheaver who married there, funnily enough he also married an Anne Connolly (from Killatten). Not sure if or how Patrick is related to Michael. Michael McCabe did have a brother Patrick. He also had a brother James who went to New York and a sister, Rose. Does anyone know anything about any of the places mentioned or any other Churches that may be worth checking out? That or any other information would be great! Thanks in advance. Dear List, I am new! I have tried to send a message before but not sure if it got through to the list. Looking for information on the above families, especially my grandmother Bridget Murphy aged 24 according to the 1901 census. She married a William Woods. Bridget born in Co Monaghan. Can anyone direct me to where I can find further information? Best Wishes Julie Perry (Woods)
Hi Jim, I am interested in your Keenan research in Monaghan. I have a gggrandmother, Bridget Keenan who married Michael Martin from Tiragarvan, Monaghan. They had a son Peter in 1841. I have no other information about her, but hoping you might see a connection with your Keenans. Thanks. Anita Roberts Hi, Susan, I paid for some research in Monaghan (Keenan and McAleer) about 10 years ago, and the information I got seemed very well researched and written and was right on with respect to the request I made. I think I paid USD 50 or 70 for a three-page report that I was very satisfied with for the money. The organization, at that time, was named Monaghan Ancestry 6 Tully Monaghan Co. Monaghan Ireland You'll find numerous references to them if you GOOGLE that name. It's just a coincidence I'm sure that the researcher that wrote the report is a gentleman named Theo McMahon! :) Best of luck to you! Susan, the Donaghmoyne RC register is listed later than 1841 BUT Priest's notebooks were found starting about 1841/42 which list the names of those married/and some baptisms. If you could get hold of someone in the area they might go to the church and look at the list. To the best of my knowledge these lists were found after the Church registers were filmed. However, there are several McMahons in the area and might be a bit difficult to locate. did you try sending a query to the Newspapers? Best of luck Roisin
Susan, I echo the comments regarding Theo McMahon. Theo runs his business out of his home. I visited with him several years ago, and he was extremely knowledgeable regarding Co. Monaghan ancestral research. He has a treasure cove of research material in his office/home, and will give quick responses to any query you might make.
