Although I don't know the timeframe you're researching, there is a Terence Coyle listed in the Griffiths Valuation (1848-1864) in Knockaturly, in the Parish of Monaghan. I don't have the beginning of this string, but if you know someone's townland, you should go for church records. If you have a good idea of the dates and they occurred after 1863, you should go for civil records, too. Diane
Thank you to all that helped with this mystery! I agree with everyone that it is probably Knockaturly. His name was Bernard Coyle - I'm sure a very commone name there! His final resting place is in Iowa U.S.A., so he came a long way from Co. Monaghan. I'm not really sure what to do next, so any tips/help would be much welcome! What and where could "Knockburly" be? I have not found that place in Monaghan - but it is listed on our ancestor's tombstone as place of birth (in 1807) "Knock" - means by the water? Thanks! Audrey, in Iowa, USA
Julie: You can learn about the civil records by going to the General Registry Office Web site, groireland.ie. Civil registration of births, deaths, and marriages began in 1864 (Protestant marriages earlier). If you have a pretty good idea when an event occurred, you can look it up in the indexes (the LDS have filmed them all), then ask the GRO for a photocopy of the complete registration. Or for a little more money, you can ask them to find the event in the indexes, too. You can download the forms off the Web site and mail them in. It usually takes only a couple of weeks. Diane
Thank you so much from all those on the list who responded to my queries re the families above. I realise that maybe I should give all the information I have in order to find my family. The information I have. 1901 Census. Peter Murphy b.1841 b. County Louth. Farmer Ellen Murphy (Duffy) wife. b.1845 b. County Monahan. Bridget Murphy daug. b.1877b. Co Monaghan Farmers daughter Annie Murphy daug. b.1879. Co Monaghan Dressmaking Kate Murphy daug b.1884. Co Monaghan Scholar Joseph Murphy son b 1880 Co Monaghan Farmers son Peter Murphy son b. 1881 Co Monaghan Farmers son. All Roman Catholics and could all read and write. One of the daughters I believe married a Mc Court, may have kept a bar in Dundalk? I was told that Peter and Ellen Murphy(duffy) had 13 children, I know that some of the sons emigrated to America, in the 1900`s. Bridget Murphy was my Grandmother, I have her death, I think 1930, buried in Inniskeen? She married Willie Woods, They lived at Drumnagrella, Inniskeen, where my Mother was born, Anne Jane Woods. Willie Woods is briefly mentioned in a book by Patrick Kavangh, `Piling up the Ricks`, The Kavanagh family lived next door Willie Woods, and his son (my Uncle John Woods.) I spent 3 months at Drumnagrella when I was 6 after my Mother died, I lived in England. I returned briefly in Dec 2006 and spent a few days with a cousin. There were graves in the cemetery at Inniskeen (now the Patrick Kavanagh Centre) Also a little Chapel dedicated to the Murphy/Woods family. I do not live in Ireland . Diane, thank you also for your help, you mention looking in the Civil Records, where do I find that please? Can anyone suggest an online site etc. where I can get further information? Thank you for all the WOODS responses! Hopefully we may tie up somehow. Best wishes Julie Perry (Woods)
Hello, This is my first time posting information on this mailing list. I am researching Gideon Delos McGilliard who was born May 29, 1864 in Scotland. Gideon D. McGilliard stated he was from Ardrossan, County Ayrshire, Scotland. But his son stated that Gideon had been born in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have not found a birth record, but I do have the death record. Gideon D. McGilliard lived in Ardrossan, which is a PORT city on the West coast of Scotland in the Firth of Clyde. He apparently became a sailor and that is how he left Scotland. He stated that he arrived in the USA in 1882. I have never found him in any 1881 British census, perhaps he was sailing at that time. Gideon D. McGilliard lived in Los Angeles, California and had 11 children, he died there in 1936. I have tried to find his parents and ancestry but I have not yet been sucessfull. The name McGilliard is found in County Monaghan. Gideon himself told his own children that he was Scots-Irish. Meaning his name began in Scotland, then came to Ireland (probably during the plantations period?). When I looked at the 1881 census located in Ardrossan, Scotland in an attempt to locate his parents, I found that the name had been spelled as McGalliard, and not McGilliard. Also noticed all of the older persons, who would be of an age to have been Gideon's father were all BORN IN IRELAND. This has made me to now post this information here, because I found hsitorical information which stated the name McGilliard is almost exclusively found in County Monaghan. Is there anyone related to or interested in the McGilliard name? Would anyone be able to give me advice about James McGilliard born about 1844 in Ireland, his wife was Mary Young b. about 1845 in Ireland? They are living in Adrossan, Scotland in 1881, he was a Dock Laborer, and they had children: Andrew, Mary, Catherine, James. There was a John McGilliard who married Alicia McCauley born about 1838 in Ireland. They had a daughter named Mary McGilliard born about 1871 in Glenavon, Ireland. I also found this family living near Ardrossan in 1881 census. Thank you for any help or advice of comments. Best regards, Lilly Martin
Hello, My greatgrandmother, Margaret GIBNEY, married James MURRAY on the 30th of October 1905 in the RC Cathedral of Monaghan. James MURRAY's father is James MURRAY, Artisan, and they were from Drummaconor, Monaghan. Margaret GIBNEY's father was Michael GIBNEY, herd, and they were from Monaghan. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this couple. I would also appreciate it if some one would suggest and furthur research ideas. Thank you Pauline Leonard Ontario, Canada

How coincidental! I was just about to reply that it was probably Drumsheaver when I saw this post. The reason I thought this was that I was looking through the wills abstracts at www.proni.gov.uk for McCabe and came across one Patt McCabe of Drumshavera. I'd strongly advise people to search these and the original documents will be available soon too. They can be a great way of finding clues to other relations. An example is here below... "Forename: Patt Surname: McCabe Alt Surname: Date Of Death: 06/06/1894 Date Of Grant: 27/03/1895 Effects: Effects £94 Registry: Armagh Full Abstract: The Will of Patt M'Cabe late of Drumshevera County Monaghan Farmer who died 6 June 1894 at same place was proved at Armagh by Thomas Lamb and Patt Clerkin both of Drumdesco in said County Farmers the Executors." If you find your family were from Drumsheaver and any connection to McCabe, I'm sure my new contact would be interested to hear.
