    3. I can't tell you about Dr. Sterne, but the listing indicates that Dr. Sterne was at that time deceased, that he had left the property/tenancy to charitable organizations or groups that had trustees (possibly estate trustees) who were operating the property for the benefit of the charities. It possibly was sold/ leased/retenanted at a later date to someone else. What those charities may have been is the question, and for the benefit of whom? The good doctor may not have even resided in that area, or even in Ireland, as the surname Sterne/Stern is relatively uncommon in Ireland, according to my references. The charities could well have been in England, for instance, at that time period, as were many if not most landlords, which he apparently was. Land records would have to be pursued, if interested, either through microfilms in Ireland or through the LDS Family History Center nearest you. That, and research on Dr. Sterne, himself, if of interest. --Sally ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing. 3. Srananny Donagh. No Tyr... townlands. Griffiths Fleming, George County : Monaghan Parish : Donagh Location : Srananny There was a Hugh Farrell in Emyvale, town nearby. See: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/monaghan/donagh.htm Also search on Srananny on google... lots of interesting returns. The Dr. Sterne reference may be church lands, or privately owned by a trust set up before death? Found this: "a fever hospital at Middleton [Armagh], built and supported by the Trustees of Bishop Sterne's munificent bequest. " Think he was a Protestant bishop. Yes. 1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] Trynany (Srananny?) townland
    2. maureen farrell
    3. I thought that I had copied some residents of Trynany townland in Co. Monaghan from the Tithe Applotment Books, along with other townlands in Donagh Civil Parish from an LDS microfilm. I had the following names (and indicated in my notes that the townland had 9 "divisions"). Names included: Andrew Woods, Hugh Farrell, John Flemming, Rev. Wm Smith & Widow Farrell. I am unable to locate this townland in Griffiths. Have also tried IreAtlas on line and also Monaghan County Planning Board website. Does anyone know what became of this townland? My handwriting is pretty bad. Could it be Srananny? Griffiths shows no Farrells but a George Fleming in Srananny. Maureen Farrell [email protected]

    3. I am forwarding below message to list as may be of interest to some list members. Brian Annie Crenshaw <[email protected]> wrote: Dear Brian, Thank you for posting a link to the Broomfield Presbyterian Church photo on the IRL-Monaghan list. I don't subscribe to the list but found your link when browsing for other Monagahan records -- searching boards and lists for any connections to Hamilton family at Thornford, who were long-time members of Broomfield Presbyterian Church. I have yet to be able to research church records or find an index of the cemetery -- Michelle McGoff used to have a web site with transcription of the cemetery, but has discontinued it, unfortunately! Would love to find those elsewhere on the Internet. Has anyone posted this Broomfield data (see below) on the list yet? If not, it might help someone. Broomfield Presbyterian Church (Castleblayney) records start 1841. Castleblayney (town) Presbyterian Church records start 1831. PRONI church records index shows Broomfield Presbyterian records on microfilm #192. From a general information web site on Co. Monaghanon parishes & towns, describing modern attractions, accomodations, etc. as well as local history - Donaghmoyne parish: "There are no Protestant churches in the parish in which services are held today. The old Broomfield Presbyterian Church has been renovated to a local tourist amenity. This centre will incorporate a coffee shop, a facility for developing and displaying crafts, office spaces, and an antiques display area." Obviously part of this plan has been implemented. Nice to see such a lovely old building continue in use rather than be demolished. 1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] Captain Jack Gillespie
    2. Brian McConnell
    3. Here's another interesting Death notice I came across in the Irish Times from October 7, 1961 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ CAPTAIN J. GILLESPIE The death has occurred of Captain Jack Gillespie, former legal assistant to the Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority, at his home in Belfast, age 67. Captain Gillespie was a native of Castleblayney. Educated at Dungannon Royal School and Trinity College, Dublin he served in the First World War with the 58th Highland Division and became a Captain and was awarded the M.C. After the war he resumed his legal career and was called to the Bar. For some years he was appointed to the Land Commission. In his younger years he was a keen rugby player and was President of the Northern Union in 1927/28. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Pritchard, who is at present living in Singapore, and by one brother and three sisters. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I was reading elsewhere that he stood for election as an Independent for Monaghan in the 1938 election. George C. Graham, a relation of mine, joined him in the practice of law in Castleblayney, and eventually took over his practice. If anyone has any other details on Capt. Jack Gillespie, or his family, I would be interested in hearing from you. Brian --------------------------------- Be smarter than spam. 3. Thanks to Claire and others offline for mentioning the Irish Times archives. I had been searching unsuccessfully for past couple of years for some Graham relatives, in particular a second cousin of my father, who was a solicitor in Castleblayney. I found his Death notice in the times: GRAHAM (Hopefield, Castleblayney) - July 30, 1970 (suddenly) , George Carson Graham, Solicitor; deeply regretted by his wife, son, daughters, grandchildren, relatives, and friends. Funeral Service in St. Maeldoid's Church, Castleblayney to-morrow (Saturday) at 2 o'clock. South African papers please copy. House private. I also found a separate notice in the times where his son Harry G.D. Graham was called to the Bar in the Supreme Court, Dublin on July 26, 1963 along with a photo. Great stuff !! If anyone in their searching has come across anything related to these Grahams or has any information about them please get in touch. 1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] Irish Times Digital Archives
    2. Claire McConville
    3. Hi All, I just posted this to the Fer-Gold List but thought I’d post it here too since there are quite a lot of references to Monaghan contained. For those of you who don’t know about this archive, you can search from 1859 right up to the present day. Link is here http://www.ireland.com/search/ It is quite costly at €10 (£7.70) for 24 hours access but I found it well worth it and the stories and info are a great resource, especially if you manage to find stories about your own family members and ancestors. I took out a subscription 2 weeks ago and have complied a name index to the news articles I got from there. My search was concentrated to the Roslea, Scotstown, Smithborough, Monaghan areas but I found when doing the database that I also had people from other areas, e.g. In death and obit articles. There are 1,583 entries from 207 articles. This is only the tip of the iceberg I’m sure, as to what stories can be obtained from there so you may want to look into this site further. Anyone wanting this database, email me directly at [email protected] (please mention Irish Times so I don’t get confused with the Tithe Applotments for Clones Parish which I’m also offering). Good Luck Claire McConville

    3. Thanks for the look-up on the Coyle name! My Coyle was born in 1807, Knockaturly. He came to the USA in 1831, at least before the big Potato Famine. His name was Bernard Coyle and I think he may have had a brother named Michael J. Coyle. I am under the impression that Knockaturly does not have good crop-growing soil. Am I correct? My Coyle ancestor, from Knockaturly, kept moving around the USA until he found Iowa, where he became a very good farmer. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Claire McConville Sent: Friday, February 01, 2008 6:34 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] ?Knockburly - Knockaturly Although I don't know the timeframe you're researching, there is a Terence Coyle listed in the Griffiths Valuation (1848-1864) in Knockaturly, in the Parish of Monaghan. 3. Thanks for all the wonderful responses on how to print out maps from the County Monaghan Planning site. My RIGHT CLICK button seemed to have no effect but using all your suggestions I finally worked out the following for my situation (Windows 200) After I clicked on photo, I had to add a step of going to EDIT then SELECT ALL before my program would let me copy the photo. Then PRINT SCREEN BUTTON Chose COPY Then go to WORD (already open) and PASTE (Control V) worked fine. I am delighted and will enjoy "playing" with the other ways to save as bitmap etc. Again many thanks, Maureen Farrell [email protected]
