    3. Karen, If Charles Bernard Mckenna was born in 1842, its very likely that his father 'Ross' was still alive during Griffiths valuation. I have checked the records and there is only one Ross Mckenna listed in the whole of County Monaghan at this time, so surely this is him ? This Ross Mckenna was living in the townland of Killydreen in the parish of Errigal trough. He leased his land from a landlord called Francis Kane. To view a copy of the Griffiths sheet and to see a map of the farm where he lived, click on the link below. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doName Search&familyname=mckenna&firstname=ross&baronyname=&countyname=MONAGHAN &unionname=&parishname=&Submit.x=60&Submit.y=8 Sean www.rooneys-of-roslea.com -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pat Traynor Sent: 19 January 2010 01:41 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] Charles McKenna - Emyvale, Co Monaghan My guess is AGHADERRY if your "s s" could be "r r".......... 214 acres, Parish is Errigal Trough, barony is Trough. 3. Hi Karen, I have a copy of gravestone inscriptions for Errigal Cemetery and there are lots of McKenna's there. A couple of stones that stood out for me and ones that could very well be Ancestors of yours are these two : Here lyeth the body of Else Hughs, wife to Ross McKenna who departed this life May ye 22d 1730 aged 54 years. And burial place of Father Ross McKenna Maybe one of these Ross's could be the father of your Ross? On his (Aust.) marriage certificate he states his place of birth as Aughdissy (sorry spelling will be wrong, I can't read the writing), Co. Monaghan. Then on his son's birth certificate he names his place of birth as Emyvale, Co Monaghan On his marriage certificate he names his parents as Ross McKenna and Mary McKenna. We know he had a sister Catherine because we have letters from her daughter Mary McKenna - so Catherine's married name was McKenna too. Catherine had daughters named Rose, Catherine and Mary and at least one son. Rose emigrated to America and Mary was there at some time because one of letters comes from there (Rose married a James McBride and lived in Paterson, N.J.) In the letter that Mary writes to inform of her mother's death on 12 September 1912 - she said she "brought her home to Errigal Trough, she was buried in the grave with her father and mother". Catherine and her mother were living in Belfast (I have seen the 1911 census). I would like to find out more information about Ross and Mary McKenna and details of the children that they had. I would like to know where to search online. And it is possible a relative will be traveling to Ireland this year, so we would like to know places that she could visit to search for records. 2. Sharon Perry
    3. I've hit the brick wall in Monaghan in family research. My g g g grandparents marriage and death registrations show they were born in Monaghan Town in approx 1810. They were Catholic. Names are James Curran whose father's name was given as Patrick Curran. James Curran married Ann Connelly in Liverpool in 1840 and her parents names were Andrew Connelly and Mary nee Goodwin. They emigrated to Australia in 1854. According to list of Monaghan Town pubs, a Lizzy Curran managed a hotel in Mill St and Church Square Monaghan Town in 1881, she could have been a realtive as there were many Connelly's in Monaghan but very few Currans according to the Monaghan Town Family Roots Book. The pub was called Currans Hotel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sharon

    3. I have three siblings Owen (1847), Denis (5/20/1840) and Bridget Boylan (12/1851). Believe all were born in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. Father's name - Frank, Francis or Denis; Mother's name - Bridget McCahey. The three siblings immigrated to western Pennsylvania - Millvale and Scottdale. Owen and Denis in 1870, Bridget a few years later. Denis married Ann Duffy; Bridget married John P. Morgan and it is believed that Owen never married. Don't know of any connection to the Boylan's currently under discussion but someone might know of a link. David, Although I don't have any information for you, I have recently been looking into the family tree of a new contact of mine and there is a 'Bridget Boylan(d)' who married a John McAree c1863. The tree sent to me by a family member has Bridget's townland as Cappog and John's Aghaboy. I would be interested if you subsequently uncover any link between your Boylans and Bridget. 1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] Terence Boylan
    2. It would also help to know about when Terence and Rose born and what their sons' names were, as that could be a clue to the names of their fathers. There is one Terence Boylan in the Griffith's index for Co. Monaghan, in Monaghan parish. Too early to be your Terence, but could be grandfather or uncle. Assuming Terence and Rose were Catholic, you might ask someone to search for their baptisms in the Monaghan parish records in the NLI, which have been filmed back to 1835 but not by the LDS. Diane

    1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] Charles Jackson of Lisnaboe late of Woodbine Cottage
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. I have added the following to my page on the DICKIEs of Co. Louth SEE: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/images/Dickie/Dickie.htm When I have time, I will post a segment of a map to show where Woodbine Cottage is. The part added to this page is in the following section: DICKIE Erected by John J. Dickie of Clanaleenan . . . Charles . . . so. of Lisnaboe, County of Meath . . . the 18th day of Oct 1815 aged . . . years. And is here interred at his own request Also of interest: "Erected by John DICKIE of Crunleenan in memory of Lieutenant Charles JACKSON of Lisnaboe, County Meath late HM 3rd Regiment of Buffs who died at Woodbine Cottage 18 October 1813 aged 75 years and here interred at his own request." NOTE: This is of special interest for a number of reasons as I try to unpuzzle family connections: Woodbine Cottage was just across the road from Derryfalone House (home of John Thomas DICKIE at the time of Griffiths Valuation) at Hackballs Cross close to Clonaleenaghan. All were in the Parish of Barronstown. HM 3rd Regiment of Buffs was also active in the 1812 War in North America. There may be no connection, but a Boatswain Charles JACKSON is buried in a cluster of British officers graves. I wonder if he might have been a son of the Charles JACKSON (1738-1813) - who would have been too old to be in that campaign himself, but military careers do tend to run in a family. SOURCE: Lossings Field Pictorial Field-Book Of The War Of 1812. Benson J. Lossing 1869. Chapter Xxxvii. Events On Lake Champlain In 1814. The famous (or infamous - depending on ones perspective) JACKSONs of Ballybay, Co. Monaghan originally came from Lisnabo(e), a townland which is a little less than 2 miles south of Kingscourt, Co. Cavan in the Parish of Enniskeen, Co. Meath (in fact, in an earlier ordering of county borders, it was considered to be in Co. Cavan). There are many attempts to define an accurate family tree for this line, but the most accurate work comes from Bill Farrell. Thomas JACKSON descendant of John JACKSON (see CRIEVE) and grandfather of the Hugh JACKSON was born in Lisnabo 1709 (thence to BALLYBAY in 1740s). Also, several of the LDS BMD pages showed our JACKSONs as "relative of Charles JACKSON"I hope to soon post a Ballybay Jackson Tree that will build on his work and perhaps have suggestions on where to look next. The John DICKIE referred to of Crunleenan is most likely John Thomas DICKIE (1787-1876) who was the husband of Elizabeth McCULLAGH. (1794-1819). She died shortly after marriage (without issue) and was a daughter of Thomas McCULLAGH (1734-1818) of Derryvalley and Jane REED (1735-1806) of Slieveroe. Thomas McCULLAGH's brother was James McCULLAGH of Derryvalley and later of Shantonagh. He had three children, one of whom was the daughter Elizabeth McCULLAGH (1788-1880) who married John JACKSON (1780-1817) of Urker, near Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh. Now, we can't quite close the gap here - but the convergence of name is interesting. James JACKSON (1743-1822) of Ballybay had a daughter Elizabeth, presumably with his common law wife (although that designation wasn't used then) Sarah BLACK. She would have presumably been born after the death of his wife in 1784. His will states "I leave and bequeath to my natural daughter Elizabeth McCULLAGH alias JACKSON and her issue the a share of the tenement she now lives in subject to the chief rent". Presumably, she married a McCULLAGH. Please let me know if it contains any errors of fact that you can spot (or grammar & spelling!) 2. The familysearch IGI shows 3 births to William and Jane in Co. Monaghan--Margaret in 1873, Francis in 1874 or 1875, and Hannah in 1876, all in Clones registration district, Monaghan. You could get the civil births from the GRO (groireland.ie), learn the church, then search the church records for more. Diane

    2. After posting that, I learned the National Archives have almost finished digitizing the 1911 census and it should all be on line by mid-2009. I sent an e-mail asking if they need volunteers for the 1901, will let you know if I hear back from them. (I'm in the States, and I wouldn't think location would be a problem.) Diane

Since the government project to put the 1911 (and ultimately 1901) census on line seems to be moving very slowly, does anyone know of any private efforts in that direction for those two counties in particular? 1. [IRL-MONAGHAN] COULTER records & murder of Samuel COULTER
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. I have just finished the annotating and posting to my web site of several news articles concerning the COULTER family - in particular the murder of Samuel COULTER of Shortstone, Co. Louth. Dozens of other people are also referenced in these footnotes. Where the footnotes are empty - this means that I know nothing (and seek the help of others). I usually enter the name (if that is all I have) since it is faster for me to add new data when it comes (adding new footnotes is cumbersome after the fact). The news articles can be accessed using the hyperlinks beside each article, or by going to the www.thesilverbowl.com and clicking on "documents" and then "newsclippings". If you go to the "what's New" hyperlink on the homepage: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/misc/whatsnew.htm then you will also be able to see in the preceding weeks the various (and quite extensive) tables that I have also been posting. This represented some of the spadework required to be able to annotate the newsclippings. As always, I am sometimes using this web site as a method of sharing my "thinking out loud". It helps me to clarify where my domains of ignorance begin and end. It also seems to help others discover bits that are meaningful to their various quests. Although the names mentioned are mostly from Co. Louth, they also had connections to Co. Armagh, Co. Monaghan and Co. Down. Again, if you recognize any of the names and can expand on what I currently know, I would be more than grateful to receive your input. So, here is what is there (so far): 1888 June 9 NAMES: Hugh CALLAN of Dundalk; John Bailie COULTER of Shortstone West; E. CUMING; W.E. ENGLAND; J. 1. Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] IRL-MONAGHAN Digest, Vol 3, Issue 124
    2. Julie, the first thing you should do is order the LDS film for Inishkeen RC parish, 0926053. Peter and Eileen's marriage would probably not be there, as marriages are included only for 1839-1850 and they probably married 1865-1870. However, baptisms are listed for 1837-1880, so the children should all be there. (Baptismal dates may occur before birth dates if there was a delay in registering births, as there often was, and ages in the 1901 census are pretty unreliable.) You could also look for the civil record of Peter and Eileen's marriage, as civil registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864. First you would have to find them in the index, which your local Family History Center may have. (Inishkeen is in Dundalk registration district.) The entry in the index will lead you to the registration itself. Diane
