1. [MEATH] Co. Meath to New Orleans in the 1850s - More Public Hospital Records Online
2. Hi Listers, I have joined the list temporarily again to tell you all that I just finished transcribing the public hospital records for New Orleans for March and April 1851. Each time I finish two months and post them, I will write again to remind you of this great resource for tracing your Irish ancestors to the US. I am writing to all the Irish county lists, so if you get multiple copies of this message, forgive me - just skip down below where I have copied all the names in the records from the particular county. In the past, I wrote to suggest that anyone researching their Irish roots should check these records of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. About 85% of the admissions were Irish, sometimes right off the boat thanks to a shipboard epidemic. During the late 1840s and early 1850s, the Irish poured into New Orleans by the tens of thousands - some to settle there permanently and many to travel to points further north up the river. I suggest you check our records, especially if your Irish ancestors settled in St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or Iowa. As I have said before, the public hospital records are better than the census because of the information they give - the person's place of birth, how long he had been in New Orleans, where he had been before arriving in NO, etc. They are more hit and miss than the census records, but I have been contacted by several people who have successfully located their ancestors in these records. Here is the list of the patients from Co. Meath admitted to Charity Hospital for March and April 1851. If you see anyone you'd like to check out further, please visit our web site at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chamar51.txt ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chaapr51.txt Our home page can be found at: Orleans Parish Archives Date of Admission, Date of Death, Date of Discharge, Ward, Name, Place of Birth, Occupation (if any), Age 16-Apr -- 23-Apr 36 Ann Mead born Killan 38 1-Mar -- 29-Mar 34 Eliza Kating born Linsey 40 3-Mar -- 8-Mar 5 James Sheridan Laborer 20 5-Mar -- 7-Mar 22 Patrick Fagan Laborer 22 5-Mar -- 13-Mar 16 Thomas McCabe Laborer 25 6-Mar -- 24-Mar 38 Eliza Kelly born Curran 27 6-Mar -- 24-Mar 38 Alice Kelly child of Eliza Kelly born Curran 10 mos 6-Mar -- 24-Mar 38 Mary Ann Kelly child of Eliza Kelly born Curran 3 yrs 7-Mar -- 3-May 29 Hugh Mitchell Laborer 56 8-Mar -- 13-Mar 27 Thomas Riley Laborer 25 12-Mar -- 18-Mar 11 John Clark Laborer 35 12-Mar -- 24-Mar 11 Philip Sheridan Laborer 20 12-Mar -- 10-Apr**** 22 Patrick Matthews Laborer 20 13-Mar -- 20-Mar 3 Patrick Adams Boatsman 30 14-Mar -- 15-Mar 32 Hugh McCormick Laborer 30 14-Mar -- 17-Mar 13 Richard Bradley Laborer 25 15-Mar -- 27-Mar 34 Mary Carland 28 16-Mar -- 2-Apr 36 Ellen Goff born Mooney 30 18-Mar -- 10-May 7 James Terrell Laborer 30 26-Mar -- 4-Mar 11 Philipp Sheridan Laborer 20 26-Mar -- 5-Apr 11 John Clark Laborer 35 1-Apr -- 5-Apr 17 James Callaghan Laborer 22 1-Apr 1-Apr -- 5 An unknown white man supposed to be abt 28 2-Apr -- 9-Apr 9 Michael Sheridan 25 3-Apr 1-Jun -- 36 Ann Chook 30 4-Apr -- 8-Apr 37 Mary Cassidy 18 4-Apr -- 4-May 34 Margaret Bryan Brought by the 10 yrs 9-Apr 12-Apr -- 16 Michael Garvey Laborer 18 10-Apr -- 20-Apr 7 Patrick Taghe Laborer 26 12-Apr -- 19-Apr 34 Ann Flynn 23 12-Apr -- 8-Oct Cells Patrick Matthews Laborer 20 13-Apr -- 9-Jun 37 Bridget Handley 16 14-Apr -- 22-Apr 34 Catherine Murray 19 14-Apr -- 25-Apr 29 William Caton Laborer 20 17-Apr -- 26-Sep 9 Edward Flood Laborer 27 17-Apr 8-May -- 13 Francis Fay Laborer 23 19-Apr -- 26-Apr 18 Michael Sheridan Laborer 25 19-Apr -- ----- 1 Patrick Gibney Boatsman 25 20-Apr -- 3-May 19 John Markee Horseler 30 21-Apr -- 24-Apr 5 Patrick Nugent 27 23-Apr -- 14-May 3 Edward Brady Laborer 22 24-Apr -- 9-May 36 Caroline Davis 19 26-Apr -- 2-May 18 Patrick McCullough Laborer 40 26-Apr -- 7-May 34 Catherine Murray 19 27-Apr -- 6-May 29 William Katon Laborer 19 27-Apr 28-Apr -- 11 Thomas Brabston Laborer 35 28-Apr -- 5-May 17 Michael Farnan Seaman 27 29-Apr -- 3-May 35 Ellen Riley 14 yrs 30-Apr 14-May -- 37 Alice Smith 18 Good luck in your research, Colleen Fitzpatrick Co Coordinator Orleans Parish (New Orleans) Rootsweb Site
