Dear Jo, The 'gaygans' you ask about are probably from the clan Geoghegan (pronounced the same!) or MacGeoghegan, whose ancient realm was mostly around the present county of Westmeath. I think they are fairly well documented in books on Irish surnames. Rgds. John Goggins
