I am from New Zealand and quite lost with my Irish research, so I am hoping someone will be able to help me. My ggGrandfather was John Webb, born in 1798,in Hilltown County , Westmeath, son of John Webb(Gentleman) and Mary Crates. However his marriage certificate in 1852 shows him as Esq of Dances Court, Athboy. Have been told the family owned flour mills there but they burned down so John, his wife Mabella Graves came out to NZ with their 11 children in 1874. In NZ John Webb is described as a half pay Military Officer, Lieutenant of the Cavan Militia. Could some one please tell me about these Militias or where I could find the information. It might help me know more about John Webb, as he was about 54 when he married, his wife was from Limerick and the children were born in different places.Would be most grateful if anyone can help.
