Hi Beryl, I'm just curious did you send the local parish a check? I did. So maybe i'll get a reply. Do you have your ggrandparents death certificates? I don't know what they're like in NZ. But in the states they name the parents of the deceased. I hope you find what your looking for! Thank You for the reply. Take care Eileen
Hi Eileen No I didn't send a check (New Zealand dollars are no use there) but a reply coupon for postage. Both my 2xgt grandparents died here in New Zealand in 1895 and 1899, and I have both their certs; neither mentions who their parents were. I am just out of luck, because by about 1905 they had to name the parents, but not before that. By other means (navy muster rolls of 1805) I have found his father's name, but still don't know his mother's. It is quite frustrating, as my 2 x gt grandfather left a wonderful autobiography, but he always refers to his parents as 'my mother' or 'my father' and his brothers as 'my brother' etc, never by name. I hope you don't mind my commiseration, folks. My personal experience won't brighten the prognosis. Roughly six months ago, I nice young lady in LAOIS, perhaps a cousin, contacted the parish priest, in Oldcastle. He promised her that, if contacted, he would research a family member. I followed up with an explicit letter, mentioning his offer to the young lady, the family members name, and a small donation. The donation was in the form of a pre-paid money order, is US dollars. No response, so far. Frankly, I'm quite naive when it comes to international/European money, and maybe my payment methods became null, in Ireland. But I haven't even heard back, if that was the case. I guess there's hundreds of non-sinister reasons why I've no response, but I tell you true, I'm disappointed.
