    1. [MEATH] WHALEN / STAFFORD
    2. John Goggins
    3. Attention: Barbara Although I research my ancestors from Meath, I live in Co. Wexford and the names Whelan (often pronounced Whalen) and Stafford are extremely common here. Perhaps if you contacted a Wexford site you would get a better response. Some of the Staffords formed a very prominent business family who had lots of sailing ships trading in and out of Wexford Town before River Slaney estuary silted up and shipping moved to the town of New Ross, and also to the City of Waterford, which are both on the Waterford river estuary. Apropos of nothing, the Gaelic name O'Faoilean (pronounced O-FWEY-LAWN)(meaning a seagull) is probably the origin of Whelan. Regards, John Goggins.

    3. I had some success with Conecticut Irish by getting a copy of the death certificate from the appropriate town clerk in Conecticut. Even in the 1880's they were asking for place of birth and parents' names, and I was able to get the County of birth as well as the parents. Have you tried the death certificate? 2. Mary Anne at [email protected] writes: << Is there a Riverstown in County Meath? >> Mary Anne, There are 2 (or 3, depending on your criteria) townlands of Riverstown in County Meath. One Riverstown is about 3 miles a little west of due south of Duleek town, along both sides of the R 152 regional road. This townland is separated into two adjacent townlands, as parish and PLU boundaries cut across the area. One part of Riverstown is in Duleek civil parish, the other part in Piercetown CP. There is another Riverstown townland, 8 or 9 miles to the WSW of the above Riverstown(s), and is located in Tara civil parish and is, in fact, less than two miles WNW of the Hill of Tara. 3. Hello Just found my husband's great grandparents grave stone. On the Mother's it says Mary Keenan (maiden name Walsh or Welsh, which we found on a marriage license for a son). It says "Born in Riverstown . County Meath . Ire July 14, 1828. Died at Pierson, Ia Mar. 9, 1899." Is there a Riverstown in County Meath? Has anyone ever heard of this person or family? I would imagine Walsh/Welsh is a common name, but is it in County Meath? Any information would be most appreciated. Mary Anne from Iowa USA

    3. Thanks for the kind comments made by all those of you who wanted copies of my photos of Oldcastle - what a surprisingly large response! The offer still stands if you haven't seen them - just email me off the list and I'll send you the set. I just thought I'd take this opportunity to pass on what I recently found out. It's simply that the odd-looking pale blue painted turreted building that takes up much of the centre of the town and is now the "ARRO" supermarket, was once the local dance hall and general meeting place. This is probably of no general interest but I just thought somebody might like to know as baptisms and weddings were once celebrated there! Bye Bry

    2. Judy at [email protected] writes: << Can anyone tell me the location of this cemetery in Co. Meath? >> Judy, I can give you a couple of locations in Rathmore. Firstly, there's the current RC church, along the north side of the N 51 national highway, about 3 miles NE of Athboy. I don't know its name or whether or not there is a cemetery there. I do know that there is a small, old cemetery at the early Rathmore church, in a field about a half-mile to the SW. This church was built in the early 1400's by Sir Thomas Plunkett and contains a double-tomb effigy of old Tom and his wife Mary Cruise (no, not that Tom.....Cruise). There's good stuff in the overgrown graveyard, but I don't know if there's any modern (meaning after 1500 to me) burials there - I wasn't looking. John and Willie are believed to have returned to Ireland for a short period. Other names in family may include Pierce, Mary, Catherine or Kathleen. Have been searching for a long time. Would appreciated any clue, no matter how small. Becky
