You could try some letters? Griffith Valuation of 1856 shows 55 Flaherty's, none named James so he wasn't named after his father. Look to his children's names for his father's name, usually 1st. son if not named James. www.failteromhat.com and www.askaboutireland.ie for free Griffith's Without further information it would make it difficult to find any family in this manner. In an 1871 UK Census that identifies those born in Ireland there is no James in Yorkshire. I went to the 1881 UK census on www.familysearch.org but couldn't find a James Flaherty living in Sheffield/Yorkshire. I was looking for an age? Mayo belongs to a history foundation that has birth records, there were 306 James Flaherty's born in Mayo with 112 marriage records. So needed a year of birth. A birth record should give you father's name, mother's name and maiden name and place. Then once you have James's mother and father's name you can then look for siblings.
