The family I knew with the surname, had a son Steve who was a fighter pilot in WWII and a son John who was a submariner.  John never came back.  Remember his death and another "Gubbie" KIVES killed at Guadecanal (SP?) made a tremendous impression on my 5 yr. old self.  They were tall men and would lift me up over their heads saying, "Taking you to the sky!!" In it's day that area was predominantly Irish with some Hungarian families.  Mostly Mayo origins and Achill for many.  St. Patrick's Bridge Ave. was the center of their lives. My Dad grew up in St. Ignatius parish, living on W 97th.
