I also can't be sure that the IFHF index I found after my last communication refers to your Martin Mellican. I had redoubled my efforts to look for the baptism of a Martin Mellican at the IFHF and found one possibility. This shows a Martin Mellican, son of Martin Mellican and Catherine, baptized in the Kilrossanty, County Waterford Catholic Church in 1851. As you know, the nickname for Catherine is Kate, and Kate is listed as Martin's mother in Martin's death record. By the way thank you for sending the death record attachment for Martin, which gives his age as "About 55," placing his year of birth in 1855. But, his age in the 1880 census is listed as 27, placing his year of birth in 1853. And so, 1851 would not be too much off the mark, given that ages in old census returns and death records may not be accurate.. The index for Martin is below: 1 match for the search criteria: Mellican Martin 1851 Parish: KILROSSANTY (RC) Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Waterford Surname: Mellican First Name: Martin Father's Surname: Mellican Father's First Name: Martin Mother's Surname: Mother's First Name: Catherine Year: 1851 Parish/District: KILROSSANTY (RC) ____ I couldn't find the maiden name for Martin's mother Catherine. The IFHF search engine did not accept Halfpenny or any other variant of the surname. I had some credits left over from previous searches at the IFHF, and so purchased the baptism transcription for Martin, and was disappointed to find that the transcription does not include Catherine's maiden name, though does show that the sponsors, or godparents were John Casey and Catherine Mellican. The transcription is below: Church Baptism Record Name: Martin Mellican Date of Birth: Date of Baptism: 01-Feb-1851 Address: Parish/District: KILROSSANTY Gender: County Co. Waterford Denomination: Roman Catholic Father: Martin Mellican Mother: Catherine Occupation: Sponsor 1 / Informant 1: John Casey Sponsor 2 / Informant 2: Catherine Mellican Notes: ____ But again Pat, I can't be sure this baptism refers to your Martin. Have you obtained the birth and death records for all of Martin and Mary's children, to see if these records give at least a county of birth in Ireland for their father? Knowing the county of his birth would narrow down the search for his baptism record, if it exists. Hopefully Pat you'll be able to find more information about Martin. Please let me know how you progress as your search goes on. Best of Luck, Dave Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
