Based on the Tithe Applotment Book and Mervyn Pratt Estate records, Edward and John Brogan appear to have been established in Tobermore and Polladoohy townlands of that parish since the 1830's when the earliest records of landholders in that area were kept. According to the "History of Crossmolina" book by Tony Donohoe these townlands consisted of rather poor land although they had been inhabited since the earliest times. By the 1830's, they were heavily populated but with a considerable amount of the green land having been reclaimed over many years by tenants who had been dispossessed elsewhere. Consequently, this group of Brogans may have arrived in Crossmolina parish from nearly any direction and at any point in the long history of Irish landholder dispossessions and migrations. My personal connection to these Crossmolina parish Brogans is that a daughter of my direct ancestor named Bartly McAndrew(s) of Polladoohy townland married an Edward Brogan who was the son of John Brogan of Polladoohy. This marriage of Edward Brogan (1843-1929) and Ann McAndrew(s) (1851-1934) took place in 1867 and the couple remained in Polladoohy and raised a large family named below: Mary Brogan (1867-abt 1900) immigrated to Anaconda, MT Bridget Brogan (1871-1954) immigrated to Anaconda, MT; married Patrick McHugh Catherine Brogan (1873-1956) immigrated to Anaconda, MT; married Patrick Ruane Winnifred Brogan (1874-1958) immigrated to Anaconda, MT; married Michael Markey Patrick Brogan (1876-1973) immigrated to Anaconda, MT; married Delia Horan John Brogan (1877-1974) immigrated to Anaconda, MT; returned to Polladoohy abt. 1904 where he was known as "Yankee John" to distinguish him from a first cousin also named John; married Mary McGown and raised a large family in Polladoohy. Edward Brogan (1879-19660 married Anne McGown James Brogan (1884-?) married Mary Cafferty Michael Brogan (1888-1920) immigrated to Anaconda, MT; Bartholomew Brogan (1889-1985) married Bridget Cafferty Because the original Edward Brogan family and the other descendants of John Brogan are not related to me I have not researched them to any depth as yet. I relied heavily on the information in the History of Crossmolina book for information on them in my earlier Brogan post. That book by Tony Dohohoe (ISBN 0 946130 38 8) which was available via De Burca Rare Books of Dublin but is probably out of print by now is an extremely valuable resource for anyone researching Crossmolina parish families.
