This Edward Brogan held land and a home in Tobermore (aka Tobbermore)townland, Crossmolina parish at that time. Other records obtained from the book "History of Crossmolina" by Tony Donohoe show that an Edward Brogan held land in Tobermore townland from the earliest recorded date of 1834 until sometime after 1870. By 1893, his land had been transferred to a Patrick Brogan who was likely Edward's son. This Patrick Brogan held the land until at least 1913. In more modern times, this land was held by a John Brogan and later transferred to a James Barrett. The total land holding of Edward Brogan in Tobermore was slightly less than 21 Irish acres and included a house and outbuildings. Edward Brogan also had a small land holding in neighboring Polladoohy townland. Tobermore and Polladoohy townlands are about two miles west of the town of Crossmolina. Th! e presummed son, Patrick Brogan, should appear on the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census. This Edward Brogan appears to be the brother of a John Brogan who also held land and a house in Tobermore as well as land in Polladoohy begining in the 1830's. This John Brogan had moved his home and the total of his land holdings to Polladoohy by 1870. This John Brogan had two sons (Edward and John) who survived him and took over his land holdings in Polladoohy. His son Edward Brogan (b. 1843)married my grandfather's sister so I have information on his family line if you are interested. The Catholic Church baptism records for Crossmolia parish begin in the 1830's but have numerous gaps. There may have been two Catholic church buildings in the parish at times and baptisms for only one may have survived for some years. There are a few marriage records surviving but they are mostly from the late 1850's & 1860's and not much for later years. Church death records are basically non-existant for most of the 1800's. There are two cemeteries in the parish, one at Kilmurray and a new newer cemetery in town at Crossmolina. There are few readable grave markers before 1900. The book "History of Crossmolina" also lists some other records for Tobermore townland such as: John McGowan and Mary Brogan, married 28th January 1854; Martin Flaherty and Mary Brogan, married 15th February 1857; and James Brogan and Cate Gordon, married 14 February 1858. These entries suggest that there may an additional generation hidden in these records such that the original Edward Brogan listed may not have been the father of your Catherine (born 1852) but her grandfather who had a son Edward who was born in the same time frame as the Marys and James listed above. If you think that this might be your Catherine's family or have questions, e-mail me at patrick.j.hynes@comcast.net. I have done some research in the area as well as visited Brogan cousins in Polladoohy townland and may have some suggestions or material that would help.
