My paternal grandmother, Margaret Coyle, was raised in Belmullet ca. 1912-1926, a time which included both the Anglo-Irish War as well as the civil war that followed. Her father, John Coyle and his brother-in-law, Michael Lavelle, were in the IRA during the Anglo-Irish War but did not, as far as I know, participate in the civil war at all, even though your grandfather had something to do with the negotiation of the Treaty and was quite vocally against partition. Michael was in his 80s when I spent time with him and his wife (I think they had 7 or 8 kids, none of whom remain in Belmullet). Michael was a very smart, modest and kind man. I think he was the rock of that family. John Coyle was too partial to drinking and his wife, Annie Mae, not only suffered from migraines but was fairly strange. When I visited in '64, she would only talk to me through a partially opened door and then only for about ten minutes. I was told that the Coyles and Lavelles went back and forth ! across the Atlantic from the 1840s until the 1960s, sort of willy nilly. From talking with other descendents of immigrants to the US, that seems like a common pattern. John Coyle's only son moved to the US in the 1950s and died fifteen years later from a brain tumor. The cousins are scattered and as far as I can tell out of touch. If you are interested in a picture of your grandfather, I would be willing to look around, scan and email it. Of course, if there are any other questions you might have, just ask. I think that Marlene Gannon in Belmullet would be a better source of information. Mine in third hand.
