ID: I3054 Name: James DOHERTY Sex: M Birth: BEF. 1828 Marriage 1 Sally RITCHIE b: 1832 Married: 23 FEB 1852 in Rawdon, Quebec It is possible that Dougher was changed back to Dougherty when they came from Ireland. When you look at census records, even people within the same family had their surnames spelled differently. My GGG Grandmother, Catherine McDonald, had her name spelled the way that it would be pronounced in French - McDonnell. The Irish entering Canada from Ireland came through Quebec City, where they were quarantined for up to 40 days. Many died at Grosse Ile. There is now a monument to commemorate the Irish lives lost there. I have been told that when ships neared Montreal, many of the Irish passengers jumped ship thinking that they would have to endure another quarantine. They were taken in by the French at St. Jacques-de-l'Achigan, and from there migrated to nearby Rawdon and St-Alphonse-Rodriguez and later to Montreal. Two hundred years ago, Detroit was still part of Canada, so many people from Quebec travelled back and forth. The Irish went where there was work to be had, especially in woollen mills like in Rhode Island. John Corcoran, brother of my GGGG Grandfather James, came to Canada on the Eddystone from Gravesend. Patrick came on the Edward & Ann in 1811, but it doesn't say from where. Thomas also came on the Eddystone from Gravesend in 1818. I had forgotten that I had that information. As I mentioned, they had been engaged to work for the Hudson Bay Company and later arranged for their siblings to be brought over. If I find anything else of interest, I will be sure to let you know! I would check out the Grosse Ile website. Nicole Gareau Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
