I have not really explored the entry ports of Canada but like I mentioned, I had heard there were many Irish who entered that way. I was not sure if it was true for the people of Killala/Crossmolina/Ballina. My family seems to have arrived in the States early (1844) compared to other Irish settlers in the Carbondale/Archbald/Scranton PA area. No one seems to know the history - it's too old. The interesting thing about the DOUGHER name is that it only appears in Co. Mayo and in Donnegal in the 1850s. Although it may come from some derivation of Dougherty, the spelling can be found in the 1850 Irish census as either DOUGHER or DOOHER (the phonetic spelling). The only spelling that exists in Ireland now is DOOHER - and there are only a few families left. In comparison, the name DOOHER doesn't exist in the Scranton area but DOUGHER is a fairly common name. Generally anyone one who spells it that way, I'd bet has some connection back to the Carbondale/Archbald/Scranton PA area. Anyway, if you find any other information regarding how or where your family entered and or left Crossmolina, I'd be curious to hear. I'd bet there were others taking the same path. thanks again!
