    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: oceanstrands Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7873.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Constance, There aren't any records in Ireland about who emigrated, where they went or what happened to them after emigration. Ships passenger records were handed in at the ports of arrival. Irish civil registration/vital records didn't begin until 1864. Protestant civil registration marriage records began in 1845. Church parish records for your ancestors birthplaces in Ireland or Mayo which survive would be the possible source for baptismal records for them. You've posted on the County Mayo, Ireland message board. Were John Glenn/Glynn or Mary Reilly and her sister born in County Mayo? Do you have their birth locations in Mayo and parents names? Religious denomination? There's a list of the names of all the towns and townlands in Mayo at http://www.seanruad.com and pick Mayo as your search county. There aren't any surviving census records in Ireland before 1901. Oceanstrands Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Oceanstrands, Your message relative to one's ability to acquire data on ancestors is both "good" and "bad". The difficulty is that one must have " the knowledge " of where an ancestor resided at the time of immigration in order to be capable of checking with a church.  Then it is up to the church to respond, regardless of the " toll paid " to glean the information desired.  Take it from one who  blew almost $ 100.00 in two (2) mailings to " the pastor of the church".  Decided to visit Ireland and went to the church twice, old pastor there the first visit (could see the steak and wine)  - too busy  to help all week; then visited the same church the next year, new pastor - reviewed records dating from  around 1825 up and found the McShane family instantly.   Reading your message would indicate to myself, that there is "no sense " looking, when " money is the key to ones roots ". Just a comment meaning: ".... no offense to anyone other than be prepared to "pay" for any information ".
