    3. Hi Margaret, Griffiths Property Valuation of 1856/7 lists civil parishes not the Roman Catholic parishes. The civil parishes were the Church of Ireland (Anglican) parishes. The Church of Ireland (Anglican) was the "official" or "state" church in Ireland until 1871. Here are the civil parish maps of County Mayo, click on each civil parish to see the names of the towns and townlands in each, you'll see there are two Kilcolman civil parishes in County Mayo, numbers 33 and 34. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/civilparish/index.cfm?fuseaction=GetMap&CityCounty=Mayo You can then use the Roman Catholic parish maps in County Mayo to identify what civil parishes are included in which Roman Catholic parishes: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/mayorc.htm Here are the civil parish maps in County Roscommon, you'll see Kilcolman civil parish is number 23 on the maps: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/civilparish/index.cfm?fuseaction=GetMap&CityCounty=Roscommon Here are the Roman Catholic parish maps for County Roscommon, click on Kilcolman RC parish and you'll see the parish records don't begin until 1851, too late for a church baptismal record for 1836. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/roscommonrc.htm Since there are no surviving census records before 1901 and church parish records don't cover all years of the nineteenth century there is no complete records source to identify how common surnames were and where they existed. Griffiths Valuation was done in 1856-7 after the Famine when Mayo alone had lost over 30% of the population: http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/users/ireland/maps/historical/pop_change_1841_1851.gif The population in Mayo decreased from 388,887 to 274,499 during the Famine alone. Many people in Mayo moved to different locations within the county for food or housing. See: http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/Mayo/History/Famine.htm Also many people in Griffiths occupied land just for farming and didn't live there. You need to check the actual detailed Griffiths on the Irish Origins website to identify if there was even a dwelling on the property. Many people too subleased land to others and they're not listed in Griffiths. 3. Hi Oceanstrands, The first paragraph of my post dealt with the Primary Valuation of Ireland aka Griffith's Valuation which as you stated lists civil parishes. The second part of the post dealt with the Catholic parish for the Roach/Conroy reference from Dr. Ryan's "Irish Records". I omitted Ryan's information about what years records are available for Castlemore Parish because several times I have found older records are available in parishes which are not listed in Ryan's book . Ryan's book lists parish information by religion., i.e. Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Methodist and others. The information I stated regarding Castlemore Parish is listed under Ryan's Roman Catholic records. For Kilcolman he refers the reader to Castlemore Catholic Parish, County Roscommon. Since I have the Catholic Directory I added where Reed could contact the church since he stated he was interested Roman Catholic records. Beannachtai, Margaret (Máiread) Ireland consists of: Four Provinces: Connacht(Connaught), Leinster, Munster and Ulster (counties listed at end of post) The Irish researcher will mainly deal with the following civil administrative divisions: 1. Province 2. County 3. Barony 4. Civil Parish (usually referred by researchers simply as parish although it will in some cases vary with Catholic parishes. 5. Poor Law Union 7. Registrar District 8. Electoral Division 9. Town/Townlands FOUR PROVINCES OF IRELAND: Province of Leinster Carlow Dublin Kildare Kilkenny Laois Longford Louth Meath Offaly Westmeath Wexford Wicklow Province of Munster Clare Cork Kerry Limerick Tipperary Waterford Province of Connacht Galway Leitrim Mayo Roscommon Sligo Province of Ulster Antrim Armagh Cavan Derry Donegal Down Fermanagh Monaghan Tyrone

    3. The first part of your message dealt with the incomplete Griffiths Index Extracts, not the actual detailed records from the original Griffiths Property Valuation done in County Mayo in 1856-7. You always need to search the actual original Griffiths to identify if people were renting property just for farming or actually had a dwelling there. Often too people subleased property to others who aren't listed in the original Griffiths detail records either. I clarified that Griffiths is not by civil parish since you referred to Kilcolman parish in Griffiths as a potential place to search because of Griffiths, the Property Valuation done in County Mayo in 1856-7. However there are two Kilcolman civil parishes in County Mayo. Since Griffiths lists civil parishes, not Roman Catholic parishes, it's always necessary to identify what Roman Catholic parishes include which civil parishes for records search purposes since the Roman Catholic parish boundaries are generally quite different than the more numerous civil parishes.
