I spend much of my time trying to verify a written document my gg-grandfather Patrick wrote about his family and heritage. There are likely inconsistencies or inaccuracies in his story, so I appreciate all leads! For example, in Patrick's story, Arthur's daughter Elizabeth married Thomas McCormack, landed gentry. However, I find records for an Elizabeth Elinor Nash marrying Denis Arthur Bingham. Was this a 2nd marriage for Elizabeth? Or did Patrick change his story because he hated Denis Bingham? Patrick later notes in the same document that his dad, Anthony (Elizabeth's brother) was brother-in-law to the Binghams. My search has shown that the Nashes came to County Mayo as part of Arthur Shaen's attempt to set up a Protestant colony in Ireland in the 18th Century. They first settled on a farm near a ruined castle in Bangor, Erris, then moved to the Mullet in the 19th century, settling near Loch LEAM, south of Binghamstown. My particular branch converted to Catholicism when Anthony married "a peasant" (his first marriage). My gg-grandfather Patrick was born in 1843, the same year that Anthony died. He was the youngest of 6 boys. Willie was the eldest, born in 1830. The rest (in no particular order) are Arthur, Henry, George, Edward. Their mother's name was Ann (Anthony's 2nd wife), a daughter of a respectable mechanic who also had a small farm. After Anthony's death, Bell (Isabella) Short & her husband took possession of the house & land (per Arthur's will), & forced out Patrick's family. Mrs. Robert Bingham owned Bingham Castle at that time and was a cousin to Patrick's mother Ann, so she placed the family on a small farm 1 mile from the Castle, rent-free. The Castle went to Denis in later years. The eldest son, Willie, emigrated to Rochester, NY somewhere in the 1850s. In 1861, Arthur, Henry, George, and Patrick followed. Arthur and Patrick ended up in Pennsylvania. I do not know where the others ended up. Edward remained in Ireland with their mother Anne; she eventually came to the USA -- found her on the 1870 census living with Patrick in Pennsylvania. Also, Patrick spent some time in St. Catherines in Canada, where an Aunt of his lived. No name given. If you wish to contact me directly, my email address is: californiastars@aol.com.
