Well, here I am, looking to the other side of Ireland for the paternal side of the family after finishing the maternal in Co. Wexford, with very little to start with. Would really appreciate some help. My gggrandmother, Bridget Duffy left Ireland with her daughter, Catherine, my ggrandmother, age 4 or thereabouts, soon after her husband Owen died. Catherine was born in 1839, according to my source, so that would be between 1840-1850. On some baptism certificates from a church in Maryland where her mother was buried from there were some other Duffys that I suspect were also a part of this family because of sponsor names and movement throughout the censuses. That would be Thomas Duffy and Anne(Anna, Ann) Duffy Sheeler. Each had several children baptized there. On one of the certs the birthplace for the father, Thomas, was "Mayo-Hibernia". I saw many, many Owens on Griffiths on the marvelous Failte Romhat site, but I focused on Burishoole Parish because there was a Thomas in there also. I know that does not mean much because he would most probably have been too young for his own house. But Burishoole only has one townland that has Owens (stop laughing), and I have to start somewhere. I shall also look into Kilbeagh and Kilmovee when I get to the FHC. I'll not go any more about what I've found on this side because I've already taken too much time. I scanned the archives of the messages of this list back to December 2006 and I only saw a reference once to a Duffy at all, and that was non-relevant. Does anyone have any information about an Owen Duffy who would have died about 1830-1840? I know that is broad, but it is all I have for now. Thank you (I'll keep it shorter next time) Milli **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. (http://autos.aol.com/used?ncid=aolaut00050000000007)
Milli, There are no records in Ireland about who emigrated, where they went, or what happened to them after they left. Whatever ships passenger records survive were handed in at the ports of arrival wherever they sailed to. US census records should include when Bridget and Catherine arrived in the US. What is Bridget's date of birth? Maiden name? Parents Names? What is your record source for information that Owen Duffy died in Ireland in 1839? Catherine was born in 1839, Catherine and Bridget you assume emigrated in 1849-50 which you say is shortly after Owen died in Ireland. What is your confirmation records source that Owen died the year Catherine was born but the Bridget and Catherine waited 10 years before emigration? Where in Ireland did Owen die? There are 32 counties with 64,000 towns and townlands. Civil registration of deaths didn't start in Ireland until 1864 so there will be no civil registration record of his death. No census records survive before 1901. Many church parish records don't even include death records. The majority of cemeteries in Ireland have no records for the nineteenth century. Many people died even without tombstones. Citing your source for that information would be very helpful as regards the records source where that information may have been obtained. Bridget was buried from a parish in Maryland which had other Duffys whom you assume were related to Bridget and Catherine. You don't have Bridget's surname. She was a Duffy only by marriage. What civil and church records have you searched in the US for not only Bridget and Catherine but the other Duffys to confirm there was any family connection whatsoever other than a surname which Bridget married into? Was Thomas Duffy and Anna Sheeler married in the US or Ireland? Was Anna Sheeler even born in Ireland? When was Thomas Duffy born in Mayo? Where in Mayo? parents names? When did he emigrate to the US? Did you look for his US Naturalization records, other records to find out where in Mayo he was born? You've searched the incomplete Griffiths Valuation indexes online and found a Thomas Duffy and Owen Duffy listed there together. Owen was long dead when Griffiths Valuation was done in County Mayo in 1856-7 and Bridget and Catherine already emigrated. You have no idea what Owen Duffy's parents names were. You don't even have a birth date for him. Did you search the detailed Griffiths Valuation property records in County Mayo for a Thomas Duffy in Burrishole Civil Parish 1856-7 to see what the property detail was for that property? Why do you think he owned a house? That Thomas Duffy actually leased property from Sir Richard O'Donnell along with 11 other tenants in 1856-7. Griffiths Valuation lists parishes which are the civil parishes, not the Roman Catholic parishes. The civil parishes were generally the Church of Ireland (Anglican) parishes since the British Government established that administrative division to conform to the Church of Ireland parishes. The Church of Ireland was the official church in Ireland at that time. You need to do more research in the civil and church records for Catherine and Bridget in the US to attempt to find out where each was born in Ireland. What was Bridget's maiden name? Date of birth? Parents names? Did Bridget remarry in the US? Did she have more children? Did she become a US citizen? Have you gotten Catherine's church marriage record to see if it included her birth location in Ireland or other attestation of her baptism from the church in Ireland where she was baptised? What about her children's civil and church records there, do their baptismal records there include where their mother was born in Ireland? What about their church marriage records? Obituaries? Catherine's tombstone, will, obituary, cemetery record? Same for Bridget? You're premature at this juncture in attempting to commence research in Ireland since as you mention yourself you have very little to start with and no records source that says your Duffys had any Mayo connections. Milli & Oceanstrands, My wife is a Higgins from CO Mayo and has distant relations by the name of Duffy, one who was a Police Chief in NJ and sponsored her parents from Co Mayo >Dublin> Coventry>NJ USA. Her dad was born in 1904 just 8 miles outside of Westport, Ireland. No knowledge of the early 1800s Duffy's, however has knowledge of the Duffy family who sponsored and welcomed them to the USA. Hello Bill, There are 378 Duffy Families, not just people, in the 1901 online County Mayo census records. Additionally there are 89 Duffy entries of those living with families whose surname was not Duffy in the same census records. There are 201 Higgins families listed in the 1901 online County Mayo census records. There are also 57 more Higgins entries in the same census for people living with families who were not the Higgins surname.
